gaheris Posted January 25, 2024 Share #1966 Posted January 25, 2024 Hi guys, help needed here. Just saw this rainbow like stuff on the front element of my 'lux. It only comes out in a few certain angles and I believe the front element is not glue (or is it?)- but could this be lens separation or does yours look like this too? Mine is made in 1982. Thank you... Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Michael Geschlecht Posted January 26, 2024 Share #1967 Posted January 26, 2024 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello gaheris, Welcome to the Forum, The rainbow effect seen at certain angles is caused by the light going thru the various layers of different coatings applied to the glass elements of the lens. These coatings are applied to increase the lens' transmission of light. Today this sequential layering of different colored materials on lenses' surfaces (Sometimes spaced by clear layers in between.) is called "Muti-Coating". When Leitz (The owner of Leica at the time.) first began doing this, before the term "Multi-Coating" was introduced: They called the process "staggered coating". 1 indication of Multi-Coating is the existence of green in the rainbow. Many types of single coatings do not create rainbows including the color green. I realised this is perfectly fine as this seems to only create this rainbow effect when the lights from a computer screen hit the lens. Surely not separation or anything dodgy. It was my first time seeing it so I was a bit surprised. Took my my lux to the street today and oh my, am I happy... Welcome, dear visitor!
