Greenhilltony Posted November 1, 2024 Share #2691 Posted November 1, 2024 I have a question about the true light transmission of F1.4 and F1.7 of V2. On my M9-P, wide open and half stop between 1.4 and 2 gave indistinguishable results, in terms of exposure, histogram, AV mode metered shutter speed. It seems the “1.4” only has half stop faster than F2. When I point the lens to the same spot and turn the ring between 1.4 and 1.7, the M9-P meter shows no change in shutter speed. However, if I turn further than F2 by half stop at a time, the M9-P meter results corresponding changes in shutter speed. I can see there are no aperture blades present when it’s set to F1.4, unlike the case on Summicron 35 V4 that the edges of aperture blades are still visible at wide open. Welcome, dear visitor! When this lens was designed, over 60 years ago, large aperture lenses, such as this, sometimes had significant light fall off at larger apertures. What this means is: As you stop down the depth of field increases appropriately. While, the exposure does not always change accordingly. Until you have stopped down 1 or 2 stops from the largest lens opening. Best Regards, Michael Edited November 2, 2024 by Michael Geschlecht

There is a round shade behind the aperture blades. When you look through the lens from behind, and turn the aperture from 1.4 to 1.7, you won’t see the blades, because they are still block by the shade. So, the actual light transmission diameter is limited by this shade. Attached are: 1. Red marks noting the shade I’m talking about. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! 2. When close half stop from 1.4, blades are still within the shade. (Front view) 3. Wide open, see how large is the area where light travels through. 4. 1.7, see the same area in the pic above, and they have the same area! And you can see the blades do come out but they block the same area as the shade behind. So, in conclusion, what we’ve gotten since 1961 is a 35mm Summilux 1.7, judging from the real exposure results in image and metering.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! 2. So, in conclusion, what we’ve gotten since 1961 is a 35mm Summilux 1.7, judging from the real exposure results in image and metering. Hello Tony, With all measurements being made with the lens focused at Infinity: f 1.7 MIGHT be the T Stop (Actual transmission.) of the largest opening of this lens. As opposed to the f Stop which is the: Mathematical ratio of a lens's focal length measured from the second nodal point of that lens, to the image capture surface. And the optical diameter of the lens at its second nodal point. Which is around 25mm for an f1.4 35mm lens. 35 divided by 25 - 1.4 The front diameter of a 35mm f1.4 Summilux is larger than 25mm. Explaining this in detail might be too intrusive for this Thread, which is mostly photos. If you would like to begin a separate Thread about this in the lens section here, we could continue to discuss this without complicating a mostly photos Thread.
