kentishrev Posted August 28, 2018 Share #1 Posted August 28, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I’m hoping to try a used M-D soon - to either support or shatter my expectations! Intend to take a lens, SD Card and laptop to see how it all works. Formatting the SD is my issue - and the pdf manual and various threads don’t seem to answer the question. How do I do it? Can I format a card in my M9 to use in the M-D?
Advertisement Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Hi kentishrev, Take a look here Formatting SD for the M-D. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
kentishrev Posted August 28, 2018 Author Share #2 Posted August 28, 2018 Sorry - I've now found the way to do this. It was buried in threads and I missed it. If the mods can delete this thread it will avoid clogging up everyone's viewing! Thank you.
microview Posted September 6, 2018 Share #3 Posted September 6, 2018 So what was the answer? Some Leicas allow interchange of SD cards, but when I accidentally put one into my CL that 'belonged' to the M10, rear screen warned 'unknown card type inserted'. pico Posted September 6, 2018 Share #5 Posted September 6, 2018 Keep it simple: Format the card in-camera. We can argue later, after you make pictures.

a.noctilux Posted September 6, 2018 Share #8 Posted September 6, 2018 (edited) Not a big trouble with M-D, the one and only digital Leica (with M Edition 60) with no LCD screen. People who choose M-D know that those are limited functions without screen. In my case, I format SD card in Exfat in computer. A tip, when turning on the M-D, battery remaining in percent shows up. A flick of a button, the remaining "frames" on SD card can be seen in VF . And with more flicks of buttons, the time can be put in M-D memory. Even the sensor cleaning can be done with other "flicks of buttons" = they are solutions with less buttons, hat up for Leica Camera people ! IkarusJohn Posted September 7, 2018 Share #10 Posted September 7, 2018 My recollection of the M Edition 60 is the first time you put a card into the camera, it formats automatically..
NigelG Posted September 7, 2018 Share #11 Posted September 7, 2018 The instructions for my M-D said in essence “Insert card” then “take photos”.......
NigelG Posted September 7, 2018 Share #12 Posted September 7, 2018 (edited) Just checked the instructions. The only mention of formatting is rght at the end (Pg 96 English version) where reformatting a card is recommended “from time to time” without further instructions.... ramarren Posted September 7, 2018 Share #13 Posted September 7, 2018 (edited) For the M-D, there is no card format function in camera. Nor can you delete exposures in camera, since you have no way to view exposures in the camera. All Card management is done out of the camera with a computer, tablet, or smartphone. I format cards using the SD Card Formatter app on macOS (available for Windows too, and I think Linus). It does a slightly better, more efficient job than using the native ExFAT Formatter in the Disk Utility app. If in a pinch when traveling, I can read the SD cards with the iPad Pro, copy the files off them, and then delete them from the card to regain storage space ... but I've never had to, since I use 64 to 128G cards. The SD Card Formatter app is so much quicker than when I've formatted in other cameras. And you can name the card whatever you choose. I'm always carrting a spare, so really don't need to be able to do it in camera (aside from emergency SD purchase, I guess).
