The 28/2.8 Elmarit would be the full frame equivalent of 42mm on the CL; an odd focal length, but it might be an interesting perspective, being halfway between the 35mm and the 50mm.

That was my thought initially, but then I remembered that when Leica brought out the film version of the CL, the standard lens for it was a 40mm. Several people I knew who used them loved that lens.

I'm leaning toward the 18mm Elmarit TL. It's designed to be used without a hood and if I'm going to carry this camera everywhere I'd prefer a lens that's as small, light and compact as possible.

That page has incorrect information. I had that exact lens, and it was certainly equipped with anti-reflection coatings.

+1. And the lens is not made in Germany either. All CV lenses are made in Japan.

Only one or two responses correctly here mention the 1.5 (or 1.6X?) crop factor that the M to L lens adapter creates.  An 18mm lens on an M rangefinder will be less wide on the CL, and so the choice is not just saving $1000 between 2 Leica lens options, you need to think about how wide angle you want to shoot on the CL.

Sorry, the adapter does not create the crop, the sensor size does. It is 1.5x, as it is APS

Yes, that's what I meant to imply, the combination of using R and M lenses on the CL yields a crop factor, which for me is an asset as it gives me more telephoto capabilities (beyond my M 135mm lens)

I think the OP already responded after reading my and another persons comments in this regard that he/she understood about the crop factor and was simply trying to decide between the two options/FoV choices.

I'm lucky in that I had both 18-19 and 28 mm focal lengths available in both M and R mount lenses already, and I like what they do on the CL's sensor as well as their ergonomics on the CL body. If I buy another wide, it will most likely be the TL11-23 because of that. The R28/2.8 is essentially my normal lens on this body.

Correct. I stated that I'd be content with a working focal length of anything from 27mm to 42mm. I just want a lens that will be small and unobtrusive, but still the image quality I've come to expect from Leica lenses.

And I'm a "he."
