farnz Posted August 25, 2018 Share #42 Posted August 25, 2018 It’s not cynical to strike on a bank holiday. It’s cost effective. I'm not sure how you work that out. The people who are striking don't get paid so it's hardly cost effective for them and the train operating company loses revenue from tickets they can't sell on trains services that don't run so it's not cost effective for them either. Exodies Posted August 25, 2018 Share #43 Posted August 25, 2018 If you withdraw your labour when nobody wants your services then your point will not be noticed. If you do so at a time of maximum demand then you don’t need to do it so often to have a large impact.
masjah Posted August 25, 2018 Share #44 Posted August 25, 2018 If you withdraw your labour when nobody wants your services then your point will not be noticed. If you do so at a time of maximum demand then you don’t need to do it so often to have a large impact. Which is, of course, exactly what was meant by "cynical".
Exodies Posted August 25, 2018 Share #45 Posted August 25, 2018 Would you call the practice of increased prices for travel and accommodation during school holidays cynical or efficient?

lanetomlane Posted August 26, 2018 Share #49 Posted August 26, 2018 We're 99% sure of being there after all, providing those Yorkshire men don't find out we're Lancastrians and we survive Friday night in a Premier Inn in Castleford. Don't ask Looking forward to catching up with everyone on Saturday.
masjah Posted August 26, 2018 Share #50 Posted August 26, 2018 You'll be ok Tom. So far we're still part of the UK. Don't know what the position will be though after the YEXIT referendum. Glad you can make it!
Jimothy Posted August 26, 2018 Share #51 Posted August 26, 2018 You're in good company, Tom, I'm a yellerbelly but i have Lancastrian ancestry too. Actually my maternal grandfather was a Tyke from near Ull but apart from that he was a top bloke.

andybarton Posted August 29, 2018 Share #55 Posted August 29, 2018 Would you call the practice of increased prices for travel and accommodation during school holidays cynical or efficient? Alternatively, you could view it as discounted prices for most of the year.
erl Posted August 29, 2018 Share #56 Posted August 29, 2018 Alternatively, you could view it as discounted prices for most of the year. Now that IS cynical.
andybarton Posted August 29, 2018 Share #57 Posted August 29, 2018 I have been a Chartered Quantity Surveyor for over 30 years - it goes with the territory. “Pathalogical Cynicism” is a Year One, Week One, module on the Degree Course.
farnz Posted August 30, 2018 Share #58 Posted August 30, 2018 Hmm ... I'm not sure of the particular reason but the National Rail website is warning that trains on Saturday from London to York will be rammed-full but I'll do my best to a) get to York and not be late.
