Trying to get my head around using the EVF. In the menu the three options were all set at auto.

What I want is for the EVF to recognise when I put my eye to the EVF it switches the EVF on........how do I set that

Anyway, the EVF is far superior to that optical viewfinder, as you mounted it in the wrong spot.

If you move it to the side, you will shift the framing which will be incorrect at all distances. If you offset it slightly to compensate it will be correct in one plane only, and skewed with the wrong perspective. A viewfinder must be positioned directly over the lens.

See my sketch (I'm not very good at that, but I think it is clear)

If you want to use an auxiliary viewfinder you cannot use this type of thumb support, you should use the Thumbie. In that case the Visoflex is the better choice.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I've had the M10 for a little over a week now. I've really enjoyed using it in Spain with my noctilux plus the EVF. The EVF eats the battery very quickly the next time I take it out I will use the rangfinder instead and see how I get on with it that way. The diopter I have is perfect for shooting without glasses so maybe a PITA having to keep taking and putting my glasses on and off .....we will see

You can always check with your glasses on to see if you need a diopter. That’s the logical thing to do if you normally wear glasses. I wear glasses and still use a +.5 diopter for optimal viewing. No messing around with glasses, which the M10 accommodates well with improved eye relief.... they stay on. Thin, flexible frames help too.

When I bought the M10 the Leica dealer in KL only had a +1 which is perfect for me without glasses. I will try a +0.5 when they get them in

And see how that is with my glasses

Just because .5 works for me doesn’t mean it works for you. As discussed here ad nauseam, any decent local optician will have free trial diopters for you to tape over the VF to determine optimal strength needed, if any. Hopefully the glasses will have first corrected for any astigmatism, which is one reason I leave mine on.

With all these accessories and the EVF it seems that a different camera is actually most likely a better solution. All of this makes the M larger and retrofits it to try and be any other mirrorless or dSLR camera, which would actually be quicker and probably even use less space. I would seriously just bring my Sony if I were going to be using it like this. 10 years on M's without any special cases, straps, grips etc and all has been good.

Yep, RF is all I need... and stock...except I do like the little M10 thumb grip accessory (probably because it acts like the advance lever on similarly thin film M bodies).

You don't have a Noctilux Jeff and without a doubt the EVF helps when shooting wide open which I like to do.......the SL EVF was fantastic with the Noctilux I just didn't like the SL files and it's uglyness........I have other M lenses that I am sure will be great with just the rangfinder, my trip to Barcelona was originally planned with a few lenses but due to possible security issues in Barcelona I decided to just take Noctilux and 35mm........used the 35mm twice I think

Next week I'm going on a 7 day photo trip to Vietnam but leaving my Leica gear at home

While you’re there keep an eye out for my M 3 and 50 mm lens? The CIA nabbed it in 1969 so it should still be okay.

That would be the one trip I would take an M on but me going back there is highly unlikely.

No Noctilux, but if I did, the RF would be fine for me. After 35+ years with an M, no problem... and that was before the wonderful M10 VF..

I found the SL files quite similar to the M files, especially with my own profiles and usual PP.

Different preferences and techniques.
