3yrs is up nov 2018. It will need a new sensor and processor ..... a 'Maestro III' .... the latter usually appearing first in the S line .... which is also overdue for an update.

Having said that, Kaufmann's statements about the L mount and the rather contradictory rumours surrounding 'June 14th', do make me wonder if the SL is going to feature......

An SL with a bigger than FF sensor based on the rumoured new high DR and extended low light capability one would fit with the 'leaks' .... and Kaufman's heavy hints, and would revitalise the SL till the finalised new one is released.

Everyone else thinks it's going to be a curious hybrid sitting between the M, CL and SL ....... but that doesn't really fit with Kaufmann's emphasis that it would show the 'potential of the L mount' ........

Whatever ..... Leica usually spring surprises,  but the June 14 announcement may give us clues to the SL's future timeline....

I think the best insight into the SL’s future will be whether the S is dead or alive and, if the latter, in what configuration. I hope we learn this by by Photokina, if not June. For now, we only know by Kaufmann’s remarks that the next SL will be more ‘elegant’. My guess is that the M and SL are closer to a 4 year cycle.

What will finally be announced on 14th will be anybody’s guess. As the clue released earlier on a FF camera going between the CL and SL with a new sensor better at low light & dynamic range makes me recall the appearance of the Q. The first Leica effort on a FF AF camera just months before the appearance of the SL. The same trend could emerge on some new camera as the ‘test bed’ for the new and coming SL due sometime later. It has been a repeated practice of German car maker Mercedes Benz to offer a new engine to a Out going model ( 24-36mths before EOL) and carryover the same engine onto the next new chassis when it appears as new model. This gives the engineers ample time to sort out the teething issues for the new model and it keeps customers happy about it. This practice has been going on since many generations of multiple models of Mercedes Benz cars.

That's an intriguing idea. When you think of the evolution the digital M has gone through to arrive at the M10 though - it could be the 'new' model in one jump, to give existing owners something worth upgrading to as well as attracting new buyers moving into 'quality' mirrorless.

A new point & shoot was announced on June 14, the new C. And a M10 special edition.

So this is really not up yet.

They are still trying to sell off the SL bodies. After three years, they still hold up, IMHO.

I'm comfortable that my SL will last 10 years and I would not sell it even if an SL3 is greatly superior. While not perfect in my eyes the SL is good enough for a great deal of things.
