possible to mount an LTM adapter without lens?

The question may sound weird but there is still a rationale: I would like to try and hand code the adapter before a trip (so as not to waste time then) but will get the lens only during my trip. I guess nothing prevents the adapter from being mounted without a lens but there is not much hold if there is nothing screwed in the adapter. Any idea?

Maddav,

Simple - use a threaded LTM body cap. Available from various sources for about GBP10. I gave one away about 3 months ago.

Well, I was convinced and am now in doubt. Are you sure it would work? Because the rear lens cap normally plays the same role as a LTM camera screw mount or as an adapter. I mean if the lens is a "male", then the adapter should be a female as well as the cap? It would seem more logical to me to buy a body cap. But then it's quite flat and probably offers less grip - although a body cap is supposed to be removable anyway :)

Maddav,

The edge of the body cap is made to enable you to screw it/unscrew it to and from an LTM body. The various makes of these body caps take different forms. Some have a milled edge like a coin, some have a cross-knurled surface on a 45º bevel. I have even seen one which has a giant, curved-profile slot in the centre for a large coin to be used as a screwdriver.

Carsten, you think the body cap would unscrew before the adapter is released from the camera mount? In this case it might not be a good idea... But shouldn't it be the same problem when the lens is on then? Which in principle shouldn't happen as the aim of these adapters is not to turn a M into a screw mount camera for ever... ;-)

Wilson, what about these?

eBay: Metal Leica Voigtlander Screw Fit Body Cap M39 39mm (Artikel 170097226846 endet 29.07.07 14:50:41 MESZ)

and

eBay: Deckel Leitz aus Metall mit Gewinde M39 Gehäusedeckel ? (Artikel 270142329426 endet 15.07.07 20:26:15 MESZ)

Thanks for your help guys.

I have had my CV15 unscrew from its adapter. It is a real weakness of the screwmount that there is no lock. The lens will screw in tighter than the body cap though, so it might be hard to get the adapter off the camera.

Maddav,

I think the first one is fine. You can't see the edge on the second one to see if there is anything to grip. As long as you screw it into the adapter fairly firmly, I don't think it would come undone as you undo the bayonet. The proviso is that some of the adapters are VERY stiff in an M8 body, particularly if it is a 28/90 and has to more the VF frame all the way over.

It would be an old Leitz 90mm (the ISBOO). Is there any risk of damaging the M8 mount (at least at a cosmetic level)? Maybe I'd better off with the John Milich adapter but apparently one has to FILL the holes for the colors to be detected, with both black and white paint. I would prefer not to have to bother with paint and use a marker instead.

The older Leica M rear lens caps had three lugs on them to use as a tool to mount or remove the LTM-M adapters. These older rear caps are balck with a grey insert where the M lens goes.

The Voigtlander M rear caps I've seen also have the three lugs. But it's normally possible to fit or remove the LTM-M adapter with no tools beyond moderately strong fingers (wearing gloves makes it safer).

The M8 seems to require more force to mount a lens, with the 90mm lenses being the hardest since they engage the rangefinder framline selector the fullest.

Some of the CV adapters are particularly snug. I was amazed how much force it took to mount Tim Ashley's pancake CV35 on an adapter onto my M8 - I thought my Elmar-M 50 was tight. I have a feeling it was a Milich not a CV adapter.
