I shot this image - on my Leica M5/50mm Summilux ASPH/Ilford FP4 - in the abandoned St. Peter's seminary in Scotland. It's a brutalist triumph, gently decaying in the middle of dense woodland.

I mostly like this picture because of the gentle tones that you get with Ilford FP4. As much as I like my M Monochrom mk1, I just can't get tones like this from it. But I wonder how good the tonality is with the new Q2 Monochrom?

Colin, I may have asked this before but what scanner do you use?  Also, what scanner software do you use and did you tweak this photo in LR or other PP software?

Hi - I'm a member of Street Level gallery/facility in Glasgow and, as such, I'm privileged to have access to their Hasselblad scanner. I couldn't tell you the model, but it's a tall black monolithic thing. They say it's almost as good as a drum scanner.

I think the scanning software is Flexcolor, from memory, but not 100% certain. Place has been closed since March, because of COVID.

Whenever I get my scans home, I run them through Photoshop. I don't really do a lot to them. I might tweak the levels and contrast a touch, or do a bit of dodging and burning. The picture above just had one click of 'safe levels and contrast', and that was all.

I find that the beauty of film scans is that they look great straight off the bat. Great latitude, and nary a blown highlight. Pictures from any of my digital cameras require a lot more time and effort in Photoshop.

Hello Colin, when Leica was in pre-release with the M10-M I personally wished they would have had the sense to pick you as one of their "testers" of that camera and now the the same goes for the Q-M too, but no once again they missed that bus. To my mind you and and maybe a couple of others who post on the Monochrom forum would have been a perfect choice as a serious and accomplished Monochrom photographer who's work, "eye" and timing I appreciate. For sure I'd have been keen to have read your reviews, but sadly Leica seems mostly to pick rather safe, pedestrian contributors for the task..........Ah well, the M11-M maybe?

Hello, Peter - that's very kind of you indeed, and I'll take the compliment. I think both the M10M, and the Q2M have insane potential. With the original Monochrom, as you'll know, you have to work within the limits of the camera. If you do that, you can get beautiful results. But these latest monochrome cameras open up new worlds for creativity.

There's a YouTuber called Matt Day, don't know if you know him? He's a young guy, but his passion and skill for photography are very much in evidence. He's done a review of the Q2M, and he really gets across what an incredible machine this is. There's a beautiful picture he's got of his daughter, taken in low light, and you can really see the tonality that sensor is capable of.

I think too many people get hung up on testing the new camera, and fail to tame the contrast and sharpness. Even the video review Leica have on their home website, showcases work which, to my tastes, is too sharp, too contrasty, and has lots of blown highlights.

I'm priced out of the Leica market these days, so I cherish and continue to enjoy the equipment I have. I've got everything I need anyway. But Leica are just so good at making products that tug on your heartstrings.

Thanks again for your warm words.

You're welcome Colin..........and thanks for the Matt Day link too, that also took me to the DPReview of the QM and perhaps I have to eat some of my words. These are both very useful and clear reviews and different in a good way from other styles of reviewers.

It was at 14:51 on October, 30th... Epicenter was somewhere between Samos, Greece and Kusadasi, Turkey.

Some marble slabs were down to ground in my office, but all of them were minor damages in our high-rise. On the contrary, lots of buildings were collapsed around my place. Hundreds of building is due to be demolished since they have listed as damaged. A few thousands are out of their homes right now. In the other side, Samos had a tsunami, which was not common in the Aegean Sea, and damages reported.

After all, there is always hope.
