At last, we’ve some fur flying on images rather than than the dick waving and frequent interminable shallow opines on gear, and yes I know this is a “gear” Forum, I learnt that lesson in another life. Here, "it’s about the gear stupid"………But what a welcome change it is to have passions, and oh yes egos too, out in the open over whether a certain photograph “works” or not.

However if you choose to put your work up on the wall, be that a "virtual wall” online, or a gallery, or in book form then all of this goes with the territory, you're fair game, roll with it and if it’s possible for you to do so, learn from it. This is what it is about and if you are serious about your work then you should rock with what comes at you whether it’s plaudits or bricks. No opinion is true for everyone, no “great work” is great for all, we all ride different bikes to wherever we wish to arrive in what we do with this medium. I think it’s fine here to “like” a posted image but I am not sure if this is the place to actually make comments, constructive or otherwise, valid or not. Compliments will always be welcome I guess for those that receive them but criticisms can inflame fragile egos and too often the results aren’t pretty.

I don’t know at the end what you call for. First you advise the forum members to learn from critique and then you ask us to keep silent except when it’s positive. I think it’s better to keep silent when ego’s are inflamed. And it would be a nicer forum if people were a bit more selfcritical before they upload an image, or give the reason why they post it if it’s obviously not very arty.

This is a gear forum. It’s about Leica’s history, present and future. Many of the post in the film forums are artistic but also give a fair amount of information on the equipment used, type of film and development techniques. It may seem pedestrian but in our digital world, anyone who takes the time and effort to expose, develop and either print or scan their images for display, those images deserve to be viewed.

Most people only want likes and are uncomfortable with critique.  I understand that.

Especially if you consider that portraits of lascivious young women and steam locomotives gain the most likes on these forums, which gives insight into the ability of the critics.

I like it how it is. Here, you can discuss the technical side of photography, and it matters. I learned over time that there are quite a few people around with a high degree of artistic sense and education in fine arts. And sometimes a deeper discussion arises. But I don’t expect that and I don’t think it’s worth asking for it. See the paragraph above.

But I learned a lot here on technical stuff, and I like to take a peek into the work of others out of curiosity, and I’m surprised often.

And lastly, Joseph Beuys' statement, that everybody is an artist, applies here too.

I wasn't calling for anything, just observing that some criticisms when leveled here on the forum do seem to inflame egos at times and then the to-and-fro' isn't very pretty. I have found that criticisms on my work for instance have been far more constructive and acceptable when it's received face to face, online there's a faux protective wall critics can take shelter behind. All this has become a reason for me to make prints, display them at home or in an expo' when I am invited to do so and most of all a good reason for me to take a workshop or two a year if possible with a group of others with whom discussions of the works can be extremely productive and even if opinions are not always in one's favour it is better way of learning about your own approach to what you are trying to achieve in this medium.

yes, but if you find that, it's not very consistent to use terms like fragile ego's, especillay because this discussions started  with someone taking a general remark personally.

Hello again, perhaps what I wrote was a bit obtuse for you because please understand that I was not criticising anyone in particular, ( certainly not Steven if that's what you think......his contributions to this forum I find to be a breath of fresh air and his enthusiasm for his photographic quest is contagious ), it was simply a general observation and a personal one, obviously like with everything else your's and other's views will vary from mine, and that's how discussions should be................And as Steven said after your last post, let's get "back to the images"!

I shot this alleyway in Jerusalem a few seconds apart (35 Summilux AA). First shot was the last frame of a Portra 800. Second shot was the first frame of Cinestill 800T.

Sorry in advance for the uninteresting photo 😜 I thought some would like to see the difference between the two film stocks.

So which stock do you prefer Steven?

PS. I believe I recognise this alleyway, I was in Jerusalem on a job and broke away for a wander around in the souk........

Yes, I'd prefer Cinestill anyway, 250 daylight, 500 tungsten being favourites.......Of course I believe they are Kodak Cine film stocks, ( Vision ), so for me they are very familiar and I have used them extensively in that medium, they are exquisite film stocks and I cannot understand why Kodak doesn't market them for still photography. If I was more interested in shooting colour stills then without question I'd use them over other choices, I should try it out and load a couple of cassettes from some short-ends of Vision 35mm I still have in the freezer! Where did you process, ( France )?

These are shots I recently took. Nothing to write home about, but they were shot on Kodak 5219, aka Vision3 500T. On S-35mm, I rated the film IE 320; on FF, I found IE 400 works just fine. Cinestill 800 is the same stock, but with the rem jet layer removed, allowing for reddish helation galore. I prefer the original to the rem jet-free copy. None of the shots received a tungsten-to-daylight 85 filter correction. This pays into the special look of 5219, I find. This was/is often the preferred method in cinematography as well.

BTW, the lens is the mighty 35mm Nokton 1,4 SC. The night exterior longshot was shot at f 1,4 and 1/60.
