djmay Posted June 5, 2018 Share #21 Posted June 5, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) There is no risk in buying a used lens without the new engine. A preemptive engine replacement would cost about 300 euros. If the lens had failed under the conditions that entitle a free of charge replacement, then there is no cost. I have done this and it was painless. Jesse

mgrayson3 Posted June 5, 2018 Share #23 Posted June 5, 2018 (edited) 1) Buy lens at huge discount. 2) Spend 3-4% of list price having motor upgraded. 3) Use lens without fear. It’s not complicated. Edited June 5, 2018 by mgrayson3
Jeff S Posted June 5, 2018 Share #24 Posted June 5, 2018 Buy used lens, already with motor replaced. No need to spend more... or to potentially wait months for repair. It’s not complicated. Jeff
djmay Posted June 5, 2018 Share #25 Posted June 5, 2018 Some of these negative arguments make no sense to me. If they were for comedy, I would get it. If I buy a used lens without an upgraded engine, factor it into the price and then do not upgrade, I have no one to blame but myself for a failure during a critical shoot. It is just poor planning on my part. I have spent far more on backup chargers, batteries, drives, etc. to mitigate risks. I hope I do not have the misfortune to discover a risk that I had not properly mitigated. Anyone can choose what they wish to buy for any reason, for themselves. It is not necessary to try to convince me with what are, to me, empty justifications. I have made my decisions and have not regretted them. Deliberate1 Posted June 5, 2018 Share #26 Posted June 5, 2018 My 70 motor crapped out two weeks ago - with the dreaded gear spinning on boot up. Like the sound a lost transmission makes. Perhaps not so remarkably, I discovered that I do remember how to focus old school. With the split screen, it is a breeze. Really no big deal, but no moving targets since then either. I have to send it back to Leica Miami, but just do not want to be without it,or the S 006 body that I am returning for a sensor check. Stuff on some images look suspiciously like corrosion that required repair of my M9 last year. My 35mm went back for a motor replacement last year as well. If I recall correctly, it took only two weeks to the day from the time it went out from Maine to Miami, and return. This versus about 4 months for the sensor replacement. I do wonder if gear sent from a Leica store get priority repair treatment. If the S sensor is bad, I hope it does not take as long as the M9. Anyways, it would give me the opportunity to get reacquainted with the repaired M9 which I have not taken for a spin since the sensor replacement. It remains in the bag Leica sent it in. I bought a Q in January as a travel companion to the S on a three week trip to Thailand. It is a brilliant low light, street ready camera. But I have not used it since my return. I am just so smitten with the results of the S, I only want to shoot with it.
John McMaster Posted June 6, 2018 Share #27 Posted June 6, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have hardly used my M kit since I got an S(007), the S2-P was a bright light camera, as it is just so good.... john
tom0511 Posted June 6, 2018 Share #28 Posted June 6, 2018 (edited) I have 8 lenses and just 1 failed so far. I am not a pro so I have no critical shootouts, and have enough other backup equipment if a lens fails. I will not spend 7x300 Euro just in case. IN some threads one gets the impression every second lens fails, but this is not the case. Edited June 6, 2018 by tom0511

albireo_double Posted June 29, 2018 Share #30 Posted June 29, 2018 I have 7 lenses and so far 2 have failed (repair took about 10 days in each case, not sure if they used the new component in the repair or not). I am not upgrading pre-emptively and would not hesitate to buy a s/h lens that has not had the motor replaced. If I feared it would fail during an important shoot, I would have the motor replaced preemptively after purchasing the lens (presumably at a good discount to new price). I understand that other people's requirements may be different (and I'd also probably replace prior to a once-in-a-lifetime trip or a super important project, for instance)
xiaubauu2009 Posted June 30, 2018 Share #31 Posted June 30, 2018 (edited) Actually, this AF motor fail work in favor of potential buyer into the S system as the s/h S lens is now only less than 1/2 price of its original from brand new price. It's great. A second set of Leica S006 + 70mm or 35mm could be had less than a Leica M240p + 35mm Cron, here in Shanghai.... or even M9p... Not so great for those people who invested heavily already in the system brand new, or maybe this is an unintended way of maintaining 'Loyalty' to the system....
