jdlaing Posted July 5, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted July 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I see B&H today finally dropped the Digilux 3 price to $1,800.00 Â That took a while!
Advertisement Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Hi jdlaing, Take a look here Digilux 3 price decrease...... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sdai Posted July 5, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted July 5, 2007 Now you should confirm with Leica if the 30% loyal customer discount is applicable to the B&H price ... that's going to bring your cost down to $1260. LOL
XD7 Posted July 5, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted July 5, 2007 Or even confirm with B&H if the customer loyalty discount applies to the $1,800 price.

LOL Â Seems logic to me. The Leica discount is for existing Leica costumers and the B&H price applies to everybody. So by buying from B&H at $1800 and collect the 30% loyalty discount from Leica directly the net purchasing cost for Leicaphiles should indeed be at $1260. Â :D
chrisbo Posted July 6, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted July 6, 2007 Hmmm. A Panasonic DMC L1 for $1,100.00 or a Leica Digilux III for $1,260.00. I'd say the red dot and the three year warranty is worth the extra $160.00.
imnotaniceboy Posted July 6, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted July 6, 2007 panasonic l1 is not longer 1100 in amazon. is something like 1280 now and similar in bh
XD7 Posted July 6, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted July 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The terms of the discount are as follows: Â "In order to take advantage of this offer, please present this purchase option certificate along with an ID to your local Leica dealer. This option certificate is valid up to and including September 30. The offer is valid while supplies last starting July 2, 2007." Â I can't see B&H honoring that with an online purchase. Might be all right for those people with easy access to their store in New York. Â "The offer is valid while supplies last starting July 2, 2007" sounds a little like a stock clearing exercise in preparation for a new product or may be not. Â Everyone's noticed the price of the L1 dropping over the last several months. I also found evidence that Leica was working hard to support the $2,499.00 price of the Digilux III. In one case, Leica bought back a demonstrator from one dealer who had failed to sell the camera on eBay. Leica purchased the demonstration model for a price that was higher than the eBay asking price (around $2,150.00). I posted a thread a few days ago asking about a new Pani / Leica DSLR because I read a news report that Panasonic was planning the release of both a cheaper DSLR (compared to the L1) and a more expensive DSLR in 2007. In the past, Panasonic has used mid July as a release date for cameras. The other notes in that thread mentioned that the higher end DSLR from Panasonic was planned for sometime in 2008 rather than 2007. Â Another factor may be as simple as the level of camera sales. I recently read an article that mentioned that Leica camera sales were down a little over 7% from last year, though their sales of other optical products had increased or remained the same. Maybe they've decided the Digilux III price point is simply too high for a good market response.
Annie135 Posted July 6, 2007 Share #9  Posted July 6, 2007 Everyone's noticed the price of the L1 dropping over the last several months  Oh Yea!! But not in my backyard.  Can somebody please explain the economics behind Leica's pricing policy? I read that the D3 is available for roughly £600 in the U.S., here in the U.K. it is THREE times that amount over £1700!!!. I do believe the U.K. price is roughly in line with the rest of Europe.  I have also read that D2 owners have been given spare batteries and/or huge allowances against trading in for the D3 . Nobody made any offer of any kind when my sensor blew up. Leica Milton Keynes at first refused to acknowledge the out of warranty repair. Shut them up on that one by producing a 'Passport' with four days left. No as it happens they would have climbed down but the staff at M.K. do tend to be a trifle precious.  Now somebody is making a whole heap of money here. The U.K. dealers aren't they always reckon the margins on Leica stuff is very tight.  Another thing of course is it would be interesting to know what the actual cost of production is.........can't be a lot. I really do think some Leica users are being stuffed, or have I missed out on the U.S. joining the 'Common Market'. Or are we subsidising the U.S. users.  Same with the Panasonic, £550 in the U.S. £1300 over here.  Brian.
Annie135 Posted July 6, 2007 Share #10  Posted July 6, 2007 Latest updte.  Leica U.K. have just announced a loyalty bonus rebate on the D3...£1300 ( about}. Now what was the exchange rate this morning.....$ 2.06 to £1 which makes it.........still a rip off.  Brian.

Secondly, The US is the Nr 1 market for Leica with a much higher volume of units sold, allowing a lower margin for Leica. Thirdly, currencies play a major role. The USD weakend significantly against the pound and Leica ( who is exposed to the Euro, which also appreciated strongly against the USD) could not increase its prices in USD to compensate for its margin squeeze (yet?), A further weakening of the USD will definitely put pressure on Leica's US pricing strategy and give Zeiss a further competitive advantage with its exposure to the weak Yen (even as compared to the USD). Zeiss lenses might become fashionable.
biglouis Posted July 6, 2007 Share #12  Posted July 6, 2007 Just noticed the new price at The Classic Camera, £1,225 if you can prove ownership of another Leica product. Don't quite know what that means but that is a more affordable price than the £1,795 they wanted compared to the street price of L1  LouisB

stuny Posted July 6, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted July 6, 2007 The potential US price is even better than indicated above. The mailing I received said that the certificate is worth $699. Subtract that from the B&H $1800, and you get $1101.

miami91 Posted July 6, 2007 Share #18 Â Posted July 6, 2007 You all need to read the fine print on the B&H web site. The $699.00 "instant rebate" is cited for "loyal Leica customers". In other words, its the same rebate as posted on the Leica website! Trying to package together two $699.00 rebates (one from B&H and one from Leica) is pure fiction. Â Mark: I paid full price, and don't regret it one bit. Prices on digital electronics will always come down with time, but there's an opportunity cost ---- you don't get to use what you haven't yet purchased. So no regrets whatsoever. Â Jeff. chrisbo Posted July 6, 2007 Share #19 Â Posted July 6, 2007 Or even confirm with B&H if the customer loyalty discount applies to the $1,800 price. Â According to B & H Photo, the new B & H price of $1,800.00 is not available with an additional reduction for the customer loyalty program. The price reduction is conditioned upon the buyer providing a customer loyalty discount certificate from Leica. Â The loyalty discount certificate also doesn't appear to apply to any refurbished or open box models that have already been reduced in price. XD7 Posted July 6, 2007 Share #20 Â Posted July 6, 2007 I see B&H have now changed the pricing to reveal the $699 rebate. I guess someone wasn't paying attention when they first posted the price as $1,800.
