Just trying these combinations.  With the noctilux, about 30 percent of the image is cropped out to eliminate the vignetting.  (Top 2 images)

The R80, otoh, works well on the Hasselblad. (Bottom two images)

Thank you for posting this comparison.

Looking beyond the objective measures, don't you think the results will remain very good if you hit the vignetting in pp to save the entire Blad file? Also, compared to M10 I would suspect, do you feel the Blad files are capturing something with either of these Leica lenses that the FF files are not....  do you have a preference, just looking at the resultant images?

Peter,

I tried lightening up the vignetting with the noctilux images and it just did not work sufficiently. Perhaps someone can spend more time using other masks to accomplish it in photoshop or LR, but my attempts were limited to the vignetting tool. I may play around, again, with that suggestion this weekend (as the X1D) is new to me.

The only real advantage with the noctilux that I see is: 1. one still may have a 35 mp image rather than 24 mp (after cropping out the vignetting) ; 2. the colors from the HB are superb.

Beyond that I'm not sure that the HB has any real advantage. Others may have differing opinions, as I am just a hobbyist.  For me, the small advantage is having other lenses for the HB, particularly with fast apertures.

In terms of the R80, there is no vignetting and it is a viable option. I have not compared it to HB's 90 mm lens so cannot offer any comparisons, but I suspect the bokeh will remain quite different.

I do not have enough of a sampling just yet to compare the Leica lenses to use on the HB versus my Leica SL. (I do not have the M10).

Another advantage of the X1D is that the EVF's peaking or magnifying functions greatly aid in focusing the Nocti (as compared to the rangefinder on M10). I get maybe 80% hit rate with the X1D, 60% on M10 (RF).

Lucky You! Enjoy that Hasselblad. Very interesting to see your results with the Hasselblad body/Leica lens mix.

Noctilux @ 0.95 on the HB. No cropping.

Look at the upper right corner to see the vignetting. Obviously not the best example to shoot with the dark brown sofa.

Noctiux@ F 5.0 (Looking at the upper right corners, there seems to be much less vignetting)

Comparison with the HB 45 mm @ f3.5

As the bottom photo shows, the HB does allow for much closer focusing than the noctilux

Ropo54,  thank you so much for posting these comparisons!

I see two very important data points in your images.

The vignetting is really not so bad at all and can surely be mitigated in post. Perhaps the detail and control at the peripheral 20% of the capture is mediocre, but the Leica lenses we are considering here were never intended to use for images into the corners.

Most importantly, the comparison with the XCD 45 says it all! The rendering and colors of the Leica M and R lenses fit my taste (and apparently yours too). The Nittoh lenses for the X platform may check every technical box there is, but their rendering leaves me snoring.

Peter,

I'm okay with the Leica lenses, but have absolutely no gripes with the HB lens (45mm). I happen to like it.

Here are a few more posts from the R80, and I'll take the liberty of posting (in this thread) one taken with the Voigtlander 15mm III with about a 50% crop just using just the middle of the file, and cropping out the top and bottom.

One more from the R80, stopped down to f6.8 (?).  The R80 really sharpens up when stopped down.

Have you tried the APO Summicon-M or -R 90mm ASPH on your X1D?

That is the lens that Ming really complemented, and it certainly is a still lens benchmark in very way.

I do not have either of these lenses.

I did try an old 135 f4 elmar from 1961.  Images were nice (but there was vignetting).

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the samples. Is there a 35mm Crop mode for the Hasselblad? i.e.. viewfinder masking?

PaulJ:

I stand corrected!

Found them tonight. Yes, there are various crop mode settings.
