Is there an alternitive to beryllium pliers,

the front group consists of 3 elements: single lens mounten in the knurled ring and 2 cemented elements mounted separately (left of the upper photo). For the first element the wrench as shown by JC is very good. Bed careful however with the wrench for the mount of cemented group. Tube has very thin walls and it is brass, never use "pipe pliers" or any other tool that is pressing just punctualy, you may easily end up having Newton rings (separation) or even damaged elements. Gripping tool shall have equal force/pressure around the tube.

Nto very often I have to open the front group, it is closed almost hermetically, usually elements adjacent to aperture need cleaning. But when I need to open it than before unscrewing the front group I remove the small grub screw. When unscrewing the knurled ring very often only the first element will go off. Then I screw it in again, fix the screw and remove the whole group. Then it is easy to separate the group.
But it is too late for you now. I made good experience with rubber gloves, you will have good grip and then wrench for knurled ring as on JC photo
