LD_50 Posted March 24, 2018 Share #61 Posted March 24, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) You can zone focus just as well as with the M, perhaps even better since the distance scale you get with the lens makes that process more accurate. With a native lens try holding the shutter at half press and turning the focus ring at the same time. You’ll get distance scale info on the top screen. You can set to display meters or feet. This may help with achieving the same accuracy you’re used to with M lenses.

Chaemono Posted March 24, 2018 Share #62 Posted March 24, 2018 (edited) Yes... all the time. I have lots of friends who are reps as well. They come to the office and the OR. I do both spine and brain Why do you ask? So, the medical device sales reps are with you in the operating room all the time. Common practice in the industry to help the surgeon place the device, etc. In order for you to use their devices they’ve shown you data derived from rigorous clinical trials often against competitors’ products. They have scientific evidence that the devices you’re using in a particular situation will likely lead to better patient outcome than using different devices. Let's think of the internet as a giant operating room or, better yet, many operating rooms (Facebook is one where apparently some digital lobotomy was performed before the last US presidential election) with many actors in it, patients, surgeons, nurses, and those “medical” device sales reps. Except no one needs to present any clinical data. Anyone can make a claim appear as a fact. I can say, for example, that I’ve heard this lens has so much glass, carrying it around can lead to spinal cord injury. Or, it’s great on the charts but crap everywhere else (this has been claimed before and I can repost it ). Or, it has so much Apo glass it lacks 3D rendering. My point, since you asked, is to support those claims with links to pictures. Edited March 24, 2018 by Chaemono

Do you think the 50 SL is as good as I do ? How does it stack up to the other glass you tested against??
Chaemono Posted March 24, 2018 Share #64 Posted March 24, 2018 (edited) Yes, I do but I think the Sigma 50/1.4 Art is also very good. It holds up really well against the Otus and the 50 Summilux-SL in terms of resolution wide open. The Otus appears to have the best resolution at f/1.4. but one needs to crop a lot to see the difference against the Sigma Art, for example. When it comes to depth rendering at f/1.4 the 50 Summilux-SL beats the other two by a mile. Edited March 24, 2018 by Chaemono

I love the whole SL system too... just oozes quality, both build quality and image quality.

robgo2 Posted March 24, 2018 Share #67 Posted March 24, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I must be sick in the head. Amidst this lovefest for the SL Summilux 50, I pulled the trigger on a "good" deal for a mint Summilux R 50 f/1.4 (v2). I have only recently become enamored of R lenses on the SL. I love the classic look and am sure that it will be significantly different than the SL 50. The Rs are larger than M lenses, but handle better. I do own an SL 24-90 but cannot bear the thought of hauling it around all day. Probably, I should get back on my medications.

geetee1972 Posted March 25, 2018 Author Share #69 Posted March 25, 2018 So I'm feeling really conflicted about this lens. I'm taking it back tomorrow and not going to rush any decisions because I'm not sure I could take at the expense of the M Summilux; I'd want to have both available to me. I'll share some additional thoughts and then the best results from the portraits I made with it today. It is incredibly sharp and doesn't lose much 3D pop as suggested above but it does lose some compared to the M; the OOF areas seem to be higher contrast on the SL50 than the M and that does make it look a little more clinical but it’s pretty marginal in the results I’m seeing. That said, the differences while subtle are meaningful and I still love how the M Lux draws. The AF is a dream; I hate myself for saying this and I hate myself for loving having AF again having stuck steadfastly to MF for so long (and having placed a lot of store and faith in it as part of the process) but I have to confess that it does allow me to relax and concentrate a lot more on the subjects rather than on making sure they’re in focus. There is however a tendency to be more hurried and less likely to pause and that’s something I’ll need to watch. The AF speed isn’t remotely an issue but I was shooting outdoors so hardly a challenging test. The saturation, colour depth and contrast are all superb but on the downside it is a behemoth of a lens. This isn’t something I would ever worry about when shooting portraits, street, studio or otherwise but it does really limit the use of the lens to formal compositions rather than candid or street. For that reason I would either need to shift to 35mm exclusively for street and candid (I have a Zeiss ZM 35mm for that purpose), or keep another 50mm M mount lens. I might have to sell one of my bikes rather than the M Summilux to finance a purchase. Chaemono Posted March 26, 2018 Share #75 Posted March 26, 2018 Rob, I remember the portrait of your granddaughter with the 50 Summilux-SL. The rendering looked nothing like the ones above. The picture had so much depth to it.
