Hi all - quite excited, just bought myself a little present! Have had a break from photography for a few years - before that had high end Nikon and Canon stuff. This is my first Leica, and I’m looking forward to using it.

Have set up the app but not much else. Mine is running firmware 2.0 - is that the latest version?

Cheers!

Welcome. Yes, 2.0 is the latest firmware. There is a good indication that a rev. 3.0 is being developed. No idea of a planned release date. The Q is my first Leica also. I’ve come to love it especially for travel and in general when I don’t want to lug heavy Canon DSLR and lenses.

I suggest you spend some time perusing this forum for Q insights. It’s a great camera, but like all things has a few quirks. More annoyances than anything. For instance many of us wish the shutter selection for single versus continuous was reversed. It’s just easier to switch it on by moving all the way to the stop. That’s continuous. I don’t often need continuous shooting. Another is the Q has 4 display modes as selected by the center button in the round control to the right of the LCD. One of those is for video. It’s annoying to be in that display mode then hit the shutter and start a video. So, don’t keep it in video display mode.

The IQ, fast and accurate focus, weight, superior lens, ergonomics, selectable macro mode are really excellent.

Enjoy your Q. We look forward to seeing your images.

congratulations, it's a nice camera.  I use mine for docu, travel, and day-carry.  Even shot details at a wedding with it (they were faves btw).  I have mine set to f/1.7 & spot metering at focus pt with auto ISO, exposure, WB.  I make changes on the lens as needed: MF v AF, deeper dof, or macro.  I have two profiles that are identical except for AF-single point and AF-face detection and I'll toggle these as needed.  The camera just begs to be used in close and tight.  I like mine a lot.

Welcome and congratulations on a wise (albeit scary) decision -- that you will never regret.

The Q becomes your only camera for most things while the bigger cameras often stay at home.

Countless times I have used the Q as my "framing & exposure" camera since it is always around my shoulder... only to take the image with the Q after putting the DSLR back in the kit!

What few mention is that the image quality is actually so good in real world use that images cropped in Lightroom are very good, indeed often printed up to 13"x19"

My first Leica, I too learned the magic of Leica glass.  This Summilux 28mm/f1.7 is totally fantastic wide open -- and the autoexposure algorithms know it.  Sometimes I set it manually to f1.7 and let the shutter speed jump up to insanely short exposures -- absolutely no movement blur.  On the other end, I rarely use apertures smaller than f5.6 or f/8 -- the lens is optimized for large apertures, possible diffraction (?) at f/16

And use the four "User" settings to preprogram your four favorite situations.  I use Portrait/Landscape/Street/General as my "Users" (maybe release 3.0 will let us name them!

So go shoot like crazy.  And savor the results from "single camera carries"...

Sounds like I'm nit-picking on your excellent and helpful answer, but I don't mean to. There is no "General": that would be either PASM or Full Auto. And i say that, because I really would find it useful if there were a discussion of the different scene modes: how are they technically different and/or is it worth going to one if you're shooting PASM and sort of doing your own settings? thanks.

Thank you for your comment... That's exactly my point -- there is no "General" so I created my own..  I leave the camera in the "P" of PASM with aperture at "A", Shutter at "A", Autofocus on lens, and auto ISO.   It's my starting point with all the other menu items set as I normally shoot.  Often the only change I dial in is the Exposure Compensation which I assign to the thumb wheel.

I've not even tried the "Scene" modes -- perhaps I shall, I just always forget that they are available!

Perhaps there is a table somewhere explaining their settings and applicability.

Congrats - you've got a really great little camera with an incredibly nice lens. I've had mine about a week - love it.

hello, can you elaborate why you think 3.0 is being developed? Thanks!

As I remember there was something posted on this forum about a 3.0 coming out. Seems like early Feb. was when I read it. I’ll look to see if I can locate the message or perhaps someone else will remember about it. Perhaps I was hallucinating. :-)
