Csacwp Posted February 13, 2018 Share #1 Posted February 13, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just got a 280mm apo f/4. There were some smudges on the front element, so I used a lens pen to clean them off. When doing that, the front element made some cracking/popping sounds that implied it wasn’t fitted tightly. It also felt loose even though I didn’t see it wiggle. Is this normal for this lens? Is the front element a protective filter of some kind?
Advertisement Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 Hi Csacwp, Take a look here 280mm f/4 Apo loose front element?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
a.noctilux Posted February 13, 2018 Share #2 Posted February 13, 2018 (edited) Yes the first flat glass is for protection the second one. From Wiki, we see that quite well just an idea: looking on mine, a small screw head on front, maybe it's there for unscrewing the first element. I have not try to unscrew it yet. Steve McGarrett Posted February 13, 2018 Share #3 Posted February 13, 2018 Yes, first one is for protection of the soft and expensive ED element below, but it should not rattle... maybe it's just a little bit loose, try to turn the shaped ring gently. Csacwp Posted February 13, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted February 13, 2018 I decided to go for it and touch the protective element to see if it moves, and it slides side to side quite a bit. This lens was recently cla’d by Leica NJ... wonder if something happened to it then.
tritentrue Posted February 14, 2018 Share #5 Posted February 14, 2018 I had a similar problem with the front element of a 280mm 2.8 several years ago. A local repairman found that the retaining ring behind the front element was dislodged.

wildlightphoto Posted February 14, 2018 Share #7 Posted February 14, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I guess they simply "forget" to firmly tighten the retaining ring... They've 'forgotten' to complete the repairs many times in my experience. Use a reputable independent repair technician instead.
Csacwp Posted February 14, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted February 14, 2018 Unfortunately the lens also has a little bit of fungus in it, so it’s being returned.
Csacwp Posted February 16, 2018 Author Share #9 Posted February 16, 2018 Leica Miami is sending a different one, but they say the front protective element on this one can slide around a little if you press on it. They say this is normal, and this amount of movement is still present after tightening the screw on the front.
