Love the M9 and 50 Lux asph for IQ but considering the Q

My absolute favourite lens/camera combo for beautiful rendering is the M9 w/50mm Summilux asph, despite preferring a wider FL for most uses and auto focus.

 

So I am considering the Q and will sell the M9 and 50 Lux to afford it. I am going to and fro in my mind about this decision. The Q,s fast AF and closer focusing are so tempting but IQ is paramount.

 

My concern and question is, how different is the rendering of the M9 W/50 Lux compared to the Q?

It is absolutely different. Q has totally different sensor.

 

28 mm lens and AF are next to irrelevant even at large apertures. DoF is deep enough most of the time.

I have 28 1.9 aspherical Ultron for now. They are not expensive, modern enough and lens size might be still less than Q lens .

The main thing you're going to lose and not be able to get back is shallow DOF. If you rely on max aperture shallow DOF to get subject isolation very often in your photos, you will lose that. Other than that, although I agree with KoFe that they are completely different systems, I think you can pretty much learn to enjoy anything, and barring that: Buy used at a good price, so you can recoup as much of your investment as possible if you decide to switch back or try something else.

My recommendation is to take an SD card to your dealer and ask him to allow you to shoot some samples with the Q (my dealer will let me take it out of the showroom) and then post process at home to see if you like what it gives you.

After much thought I am selling my beloved M9, keeping my 50 Lux asph, and getting the Q. I am happy with my decision.
