I’m old enough to remember growing up with film, but when I got into photography in the mid 2000s film was on its way out. I am an M-D owner and enjoy it for the simple experience. I also felt that live view was unacceptably laggy on my (since sold) M 246. So when I was looking at getting back to a digital M after about a year without one, the M-D was appealing as a better digital implementation of the M concept than the dated M 240 (which had a poor screen and poor implementation of live view compared to my Fuji x-pro2).

The M-D is my hands-down, most loved, camera since cameras became computers. Previous loves were the M6 and Nikon F2.

Anyone want to proffer an opinion of what will happen to the dollar value in the short and long term given the M-D’s comparatively short production run?

Why worry ?

Joe as you are lucky to own and use one M-D, why bother for it's cost in future ?

I think that people who wanted M-D enough have one already by now.

I mean that if people use their M-D, and love to use it, they may not care about the raise or fall of it's value.

Only if the replacement camera hit the market, and M-D users want to upgrade, that's another story,

in that case "upgrading" may cost the double of "market M-D value" or more as usual.

Have fun.

While I'm not a wealthy person, I own two M-D's (I got overly enthusiastic & overestimated my need for two bodies) and I'm feeling the need to part with one of them but there's no urgency.

So the purpose of my question was to gauge the market for the best time to sell the one which has the least use.

Thanks Joe for clarification.

If you don't need money, keep it and hope for a stable value of M-D.

If you don't need two, sell one for now or later, and hope not to loose much money.

If I can afford, I'd buy another M-D, but that's not for now.

As I keep other Ms also, that's not urgent.

I don't want to sell some stuff for a second M-D as spare.

Some years ago, I was also so surprised/enthusiasm with the launching of M-A (another dream-came-true-LeicaM) that I had bought two:

I have been on the fence on the M-D for a while. I'd love to have one but my stable is pretty full. I use my M246 sparingly. Perhaps I will put it for sale when I get home in early May and find an M-D or better yet, find someone who wants to trade. It will be interesting to see if Leica does upgrade the concept. Cheers--lt

The M-D is my first digital Leica, only having film versions before then.

If you like shooting film, I think you'll appreciate this camera.

Knowing that you can't gimp is both infuriating and enchanting.

Seeing it for the first time as the RAW is revealed (only records RAW) on your computer screen can be both under and overwhelming.

It's like playing the piano without looking at the keyboard, only staring at the music in front of you.

The learning curve has been huge for me, but I see hope (I think) and it's all been great fun.

As today,

Curious that M-D is always offered in Leica web site:

http://us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-M/Leica-M-D

I like this text:

Simplicity personified, photographers using the Leica M-D for the first time will instinctively and intuitively know how to use it. With the deliberate omission of anything but the essentials, the Leica M-D provides the greatest freedom to focus on creativity and capturing the decisive moment every time.

But "capturing the decisive moment every time", I'm not there  for now.

Leica stores in Bellevue, WA and Las Vegas, NV are still showing them "in stock".  Most other Leica stores are not.

What would happen if the last M-D of those shops sold out ?

I am planning to get an M-D in a week or so. Have to sell some Nikon gear first.

I do have question: does the camera give you some indication of sd card status - ie. shots remaining?

yes

You may download the M-D manual and more from Leica Camera web site:

http://us.leica-camera.com/Service-Support/Support/Downloads?category=&subcategory=131376&type=&language=all

When user push the lever to "ON" the M-D shows in viewfinder the remaining % of battery.

After each photo taken, it shows in VF the number of remaining "frames".

At any moment (if M-D is "ON" of course), pushing the "function button" at right of the shutter, will be show "% of battery", second push show "number frames remaining" and toggle between the two.
