Quick question - I have googled but I haven't found my answer. I want to buy a 35mm FLE in silver, but I won't buy one if it weighs substantially more than the black version. Does anybody know if it is made from the same material as the black version, and how much more it weighs?

The interesting they are the same weight. I've owned both the black anodized version of the 35mm f2 Summicron ASPH and the chrome, and the chrome version of the Summicron is substantially heavier.

I have the black 35mm f1.4 FLE today. It's a nice weight. Not too heavy but definitely weightier than the 35mm f2 Summicron ASPH.

More recent silver lenses are made from the same material (aluminum?) as their black counterparts. A few years ago Leica started to roll out the “silver anodized” versions of lenses like the 35 summicron, noct, summarits, etc. The prior approach to silver lenses was “silver chrome” on brass, which created a substantial weight difference between the black and silver version of the same lens. I believe the 50 Summilux ASPH is the last silver lense available for sale new that is made from brass.*

*Exceptions: New retro reduction of 50 APO and 28 Summaron.

Gee. I wonder if it’s because there’s more glass in it?

Duh, LOL... just expressing my surprise the two FLE lenses, chrome and black, are the same weight when the two Summicrons are definitely not, with the chrome version being much heavlier.

One is brass and the other is probably not.
