On 2/19, I asked whether there was any update on the 75 Noctilux arriving in stores.  I don't believe the story has advanced in the two weeks since.  So throwing this out there again: anyone have any firm information on whether the mythical beast, promised for "early 2018," has materialized anyplace?

Sorry John, not a peep in Los Angeles. I spoke with someone who went to WPPA a couple of weeks ago and saw the lens there. They were told it was the only one in the US. As for me, vacation starts Saturday, so I have moderat d my hopes.

A person who appears to own every single Leica lens there is just posted some pictures on dpreview one day ago. From observation, he usually gets a newly launched Leica product one to two weeks before more become available. So, some dealers should get a lens this month. Mine is awaiting a copy any day now. But one needs to be first on the list.

That image Dr. Rohde posted shows that when the pupils are the focal point, a pair of glasses and the subject's mustache are out of focus -- thin focal plane!  And you are right: Dr. Rohde, like Seal and some other friends of Leica, seems to get equipment before release.  So the contractions are quickening.  Thanks for posting this.

They are starting to ship. But it’s a trickle. Some dealers will get one this week. I just picked mine up. :)

Congrats! From a US Leica store?

Also, how is the focusing/RF calibration? It took me three 50 Noct copies before I found one that didn’t front focus so I’m curious how well adjusted the 75 nocts are.

Chaemono,

I also would be interested in knowing the city and country where the lens was delivered, and date of manufacture if you are willing to share. Thank you.

Not too far from Wetzlar. In fact, one can almost see Wetzlar from my place. :) Will check on the other points but I suspect there will be more availability by the end of this week.

How's the RF calibration on the lens? I recall that quite a few of the first 50 noctiluxes showed strong back-focusing, but I'm hoping that Leica will get the 75 noct calibration just right!

Yes, I meant to get to your points as well. I’ll check as soon as I can but for now it’s mounted on the SL. I agree, the first 50 Noctilux I had to give back, too.

Date of manufacture 1/31/2018 and focusing/RF calibration is perfect.

Some test shots below with less compressed JPEGs in this link: https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-JBNLHF/

The first two are with the SL which makes it a breeze to focus this lens. The last two are with the M10 to show how well it is calibrated with the RF of my M10 out of the box. I have more and I'm extremely happy how well it can be focused even without the Visoflex on the M10. It also balances well, I think, if one has the thumb rest.

Thanks, Chaemono.  If you were focusing the RF on the very center of the newspaper pages, then the 75 noct is front-focusing.   Not a huge amount, but enough that I suspect one's hit rate when shot wide open near the MFD would be lower.  Of course, if you were actually focusing the RF on the near-middle COLUMN of text (the word Eisenhower), rather than the center vertical line of the page, then the RF calibration is perfect!

I’m curious to know, would anyone sell there .95 to help fund the 75 nocti?

I might sell one of my .95. Originally, I was thinking I'd like to shoot the .95 on the Sony as well and was too lazy to swap lenses on body so I bought another dedicated to a Sony body. But that body with the .95 on it rarely gets touched. Just sits on the shelf really. Makes more sense to swap it for the 75!

That's what I have done.  Well, traded in my 50 0.95, and 75 Summicron.  And I still am only two-thirds of the way to the purchase!  My rationalization is I have the 50 APO, Summilux, and SL-50 Summilux.  So if I am going for Nocti magic, the 75 makes more sense.  For me.  And I may be mad.
