sir_ian Posted January 23, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 23, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) At no fault other than my own. my Q has died. i walked into the sea on a recent trip with out around my neck and got about chest deep before i realized anyway i sent it in to Leica and they said it was unrepairable (due to economics) so my question is do any of you know what if i can sell it for parts or anything other than just being a paper weight in my house. Sad sad days in nyc. also its insane how the price is so high on them now.

Leica Guy Posted January 23, 2018 Share #4 Posted January 23, 2018 So very very sorry to hear of your loss. Possibly sell for parts on eBay. Don’t know. Someone might be interested. I hope you can replace it and soon. That’s the only way I know to put the bad memory behind you. Good luck.

beez Posted January 23, 2018 Share #6 Posted January 23, 2018 So sorry to hear about this. Because it was immersed in salt water, I doubt anything from the camera would be useful, and it will all continue to corrode as time goes on. Sea water is one of the definitive killers of electronic/digital cameras. Here's a good article about taking apart a Sony A7sII to see what's left after being dropped into salt water. https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/10/about-getting-your-camera-wet-teardown-of-a-salty-sony-a7sii/

Plenty of speculation and wishful thinking on the forum about a Q2 and nothing from anyone with inside knowledge that I’ve seen. I would not wait. Maybe pick up a used one at a Leica store or on eBay. Good luck. Edited January 24, 2018 by Infiniumguy

paulsydaus Posted January 27, 2018 Share #10 Posted January 27, 2018 It would be really cool if Leica could offer you a discount or at cost replacement on a new given the circumstances. But I can’t see that happening. Probably buying one on the second hand market would be your best bet? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Falstaff Posted January 30, 2018 Share #11 Posted January 30, 2018 Oh dear, the pain is palpable. Here's hope you can replace it.
Leica Guy Posted January 30, 2018 Share #12 Posted January 30, 2018 This tragic experience is probably a reminder for all of us to examine or consider insuring our camera gear. I just looked at my policy and the attached image shows what's covered in comparison to other options. Good to know that it's worldwide, no deductible and covers loss or damage. I'm not pushing any particular company, This is what mine covers. Welcome, dear visitor! I'm not pushing any particular company, This is what mine covers. My policy has the same sort of cover but a limit of £3,000 on valuables unless specified. So I specified the Q at £3500 and of course had a premium increase and now had a second increase when specifying my Nikon D850. Ah well, buy expensive gear and recognise that is not the end of the expense.

Ah well, buy expensive gear and recognise that is not the end of the expense. My policy requires a specific amt. per item. I chose $3000 for the Q thinking mine is 2+ years old. At least it would give me a good start at buying a Q2. :-)
sumolux Posted February 5, 2018 Share #15 Posted February 5, 2018 Sorry to hear about your camera! Many years ago, I had a prized shortwave radio that fell into the sea.... Fished it out, cleaned it inside with sweet water to keep salt from corroding the circuits - and a few days later it was working normally! Not to say your Q will be fixed that way , however, seen it is a lost case, the electronics could be salvaged for parts resale perhaps by just rinsing them off. And by taking it apart you might learn a lot about how the Q is constructed inside? Just a thought...

The real consideration here is what is the cost of this kind of coverage per $1000 in equipment? Of course, the amount of deductible will affect the premium.
