DanielJohannes Posted January 11, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 11, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just got my M3 back from a technician who cleaned the finders, checked the shutter speeds and calibrated focus (not a full CLA). While everything seems in order, I've noticed that the film advance lever feels much tighter than it did before. This is especially noticeable in the distance before the film begins to advance (before the red dots on the rewind knob start to rotate). After the film has been advanced, the lever also only returns to this point, rather than to the shutter speed dial. This isn't a major problem, and I was still able to shoot up 2 rolls of film with no issues . I'm just worried that something might have been over-tightened, and that this may cause problems in the long run. Also, the service came with a 3 month warranty, so if this is something to worry about I can probably get it fixed for free.

250swb Posted January 14, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 14, 2018 Doesn't sound right to me, it should be buttery smooth with no resistance other than the light feel of the film being wound.
michaelwj Posted January 14, 2018 Share #3 Posted January 14, 2018 I've never had an M body where the lever returned all the way by itself, it normally stops abou 1cm away on its own accord. As for the stiffness, what's it like without film?
friedeye Posted January 24, 2018 Share #4 Posted January 24, 2018 Sounds like the curtains were over-tightened.
Ko.Fe. Posted January 24, 2018 Share #5 Posted January 24, 2018 Time for full CLA and most likely another service person.
Jorbloss Posted May 30, 2024 Share #6 Posted May 30, 2024 Hey there - sorry to bother you so many years later but I was just curious about what you did to remedy this. I just got my m2 back from service today and am facing the same issue.

onelensman Posted June 2, 2024 Share #8 Posted June 2, 2024 I have serviced my M4 a couple of times and found that the chrome retaining ring surrounding the shutter release button is normally very tightly torqued down. If on reassembly this ring is overtightened this results in the film wind lever feeling stiff. The remedy is to back off this ring anticlockwise very slightly for which a proper fitting ring spanner is required
