Another LR 1.1 problem & a solution

I found that V1.1, when I finally managed the upgrade, was astonishingly slow (over a minute to zoom to loupe view, beachball of death when I tried to scroll the library, totally unusable and 100% CPU usage).

I searched the Adobe forums and found that plenty of other people had the same problem on both Mac and PC. So I figured others hear might have had the problem too.

After some fiddling about, I found that turning off 'automatically write changes into XMP' in catalog settings>metadata and then restarting Lightroom cures the problem completely.

I am now (finally) loving V1.1 and its amazing Clarity Control slider. Yum yum yum.

Has anyone figured out what exactly "clarity" does? It seems to add a subtle contrast at the intersection of light and dark areas, no?

I believe you're correct. I recall hearing somewhere that Clarity is the equivalent of performing an LCE (Local Contrast Enhancement) on the image. LCE is explained in detail on the Luminous Landscape web site at Contrast Enhancement
