Another 'low budget' but high quality long zoom lens solution for any Leica / Panasonic L-mount camera, is the manual focus Canon FD 100-300mm f5.6  'L' lens which offers 1:3 macro and has one ED, and one fluorite lens element. Adapts very easily to any L mount camera via eg an URTH FD to L-mount adapter.

But not to be confused with the regular 'non-L' version Canon FD 100-300mm f5.6 zoom lens. Canon's 'L' lenses = Low dispersion glass elements for minimising aberrations.

The Canon FD 100-300mm f5.6  'L' lens is allegedly a scarce lens but it's regularly seen offered for sale and can be bought for c. £100 - £175.

The lens has very good reviews https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4226959

The lens' relatively 'slow' aperture is of no consequence with modern digital ICL cameras by virtue of their excellent high ISO capability – which enables faster shutter speeds. Furthermore, amplified & magnified live view = easy & accurate manual focusing.

Legacy manual focus lenses offer lots of usable options for budget conscious digital ICL camera users.

Thank you very much for all the information you have given me and after reading all the messages I now have the clearest ideas.

The Canon FD 100-300mm f5.6 'L' is a budget option that could be... The f5.6"L" are less widely available, but still maintain a low price.

Another option I like now is:

The first one is Leica but in this same thread you say that the electronics of both lenses are made by MINOLTA so the MINOLTA is cheaper:

Thank you very much mate, you are a crack, if you ever visit Spain here you have a friend.

I have already ordered it here in Spain, for shipping costs.

The cheap adapter on amazon (I hope I don't have any problems with it) is this:

I have also seen that it can be extended up to 2000mm, although this must be done as an experiment.

At 2000mm and f32, you are going to need a very static bird to photograph with that lens. I have a similar set up for my Zeiss modular lens set which goes from 300mm f4 to 1200 at f16. The number of elements at 1200 is amazing at 21. Quality is less than stellar at 1200mm but better than the Leica 800mm I used to have.

Not recommended . Camera shake is inevitable and focus very difficult. 'Balance' on the illustrated tripod collar likely not easily achievable

I have tried both the 500 MR Telyt plus APO Extender and my 1200mm Zeiss up in my bedroom where I store all my photo equipment. I used a massive Manfrotto Medium/Large 076B format tripod but my bedroom has wooden floors. The tiniest movement in the bedroom and the image blurred. I have a better mounting ring for my MR Telyt that holds the lens itself. Really the tripod needs to be sat on concrete or rock to prevent shaking.

I ordered the Minolta 500 f8 lens on 3-4-2023 and received it yesterday 4-4-2023. The same thing happened with the Minolta MD to L adapter.

Of all the ones I have seen, it is one of the most beautiful along with the Leica MR Tely 500 f8.0. (But the cheaper Minolta) It looks compact and well balanced.

Now it remains to test it and see how it behaves.

Since it has a 6-month warranty, I would like to know what test I should do to find out if it has faults.

This is how it looks on my TL2.

I have just received a Leica 42300 and 42305 adapters to enable a Leica R camera to be mounted on my Televid 77 spotting scope. When mounted thus, the Televid will be equivalent to an f10.5 800 mm lens. There is in theory a 42301 adapter than makes the Televid 77 into a 1000 mm lens but the only one of these I could find for sale was in Jakarta, Indonesia and they wanted the equivalent of over £500 for it, which is way over the going rate. The 42300 Televid to T2 adapter I bought from West Yorkshire cameras cost me £99 along with the 42305 Leica T2 to R adapter for a further £35. They seem pretty much like new and barely used and the 42300 comes with its original carrying case and Leica (White with red lettering) box. The only thing not there are the instructions but the method of operation is rather obvious.

PS Obviously using other adapters, R to M or R to L, I will also be able to use my M and L mount digital cameras on the Televid 77. I had previous bought an SRB Griturn Televid to Micro 4/3rds adapter but cannot get it to focus sharply using the 20-60 ocular on my Televid with an Olympus EP-5.

The Minolta 500mm reflex lens can be used with extension tubes – e.g. dragonfly photography

Probando TL2 + Minolta 500mm f8.

The FD 300/4 L lens is truly excellent and was recommended by Doug Herr (before the TL2 / CL era) as a good substitute for the Leica Apo Telyt R 280/4  :

https://www.ffordes.com/p/SOR-42-054112/canon-fd/300mm-f4-fd-l. but not to be confused with the non-L version .

The FD 300/4 L lens has 2 ED glass elements and works well with the FD 1.4x extender 'A' as a 420/5.6 , i.e., 450/4 and 630/5.6 FF equiv on APS-C TL2

And note FD 300/4 L has dedicated removable tripod collar which can be slackened off / tightened enabling 360º rotation

There is also a Canon FD 200mm f4 macro lens which uses the very same tripod collar; it's seldom listed for sale but worth considering if focusing helicoid is not worn / loose. Lens offers 1:1 magnification with excellent lens to subject distance (compared to shorter focal length macro lenses).  Lens has some CA which 'disappears' at f8 . Lens was optimised for use at f11 according to Canon's advice to me in 1984 – when I bought mine.

I decided to try a Nikon 200 micro, an internal focusing lens infinity to 1:2, fairly light. I used one in the operating room when I did medical photography. I also picked up the Nikon TC301 a 2x converter for this lens, which gives the lens 1:1 capabilities, admittedly at f8, but also a light weight 400mm. I have liked the 105 micro Nikkor f2.8 on the CL, will see how the 200 does.
