Really nice portrait.

Constructive criticism if I may:

1. I would have preferred the distracting top right corner cropped out

2. Shame also about the distracting blue backpack and it's effect on his shadow but you may not have had the option.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks buddy and I appreciat the constructive feedback. Regarding the distracting top right part, yeah I completely agree it would be so much better without that. I had thought about croping it out in post (there was no way of doing it when composing as when I framed it to achieve that, I lost the shadow on the back wall. But copping it out means you lose the diagonal throw of the light from the top left corner. It's frustrating but it's a street portrait so you have to work with what you're given.

The blue bag is actually a deliberate inclusion though; I quite often ask my subjects to include whatever they were holding when I met them partly because it gives them something meaningful to do with their hands (and that makes them much more relaxed - when someone doesn't know what to do with their hands it can make them feel quite anxious) but mostly because it's about the character of it being a street portrait and taken in the moment. But you're right about the impact it has on the shadow.

Thanks agian, genuinely appreciate the feedback.

You're welcome.

Agree about the vagaries of the street composition, just that it is quite a formal portrait..  You probably could have then only dealt with that upper right corner being further back with a slightly longer lens.

I like your technique of maintaining familiarity.  Shame the bag didn't have a brown/yellow trim as I like the warmness of his jacket and the light on the brick & concrete.

:-)
