Since you are curious I will post a couple of images tomorrow. But I must mention that they are test images and in no way artistic. Normally they would be deposited in the bin, and smartly so!

I hope you have a couple of shots with just the center spot, without the soft focus, and fully open... I'm looking forward to seeing the results, whatever they are.

Unfortunately I have only the SF filter in 55mm, and not wishing to stick a centre spot (sticky tape) on the front element. I don’t think I’ll waste another £3 or £4 on another filter.

Simulating the Thambar is dream land.

No matter how much time and money is spent on stockings, vaseline, filters, etc. the best and only way to get the Thambar rendering on an M is, not surprisingly, to use a Thambar. I wish I could get a wide angle to render as the Thambar does but it’s not going to happen.

Hear, hear Ian.  I reiterate what I said in the first half of post #61 five and a half years ago!

I don't remember reading #61, but I agree with you. I sold my Thambar, but I'm glad I owned and used it (not often enough), and learned what it could do.

Image taken after a massive thunderstorm at the moment, when the sun came out again. There are plenty of raindrop reflections in the image.

Having tested the 90mm f2 with a soft focus filter with an opaque 12mm centre spot the results in no way approach the Thambar. £3 odd down the drain.

I won’t embarrass myself by posting the resulting images.

.

I was just trying this with my 90mm f2.8 Tele-Elmarit, a Hoya Duto filter and a 5mm center spot. Need to try the test again tomorrow on a tripod with better lighting

Wow, really beautiful photo. It really deserves to be printed. Do you remember the aperture and whether this was with the cs filter?

Do you think you could try a few with only the spot filter?

Happy you like it !  Checked for the Exif Data, but there is no aperture mentioned. Definitely it was between 2.2 and 2.6, even more likely between 2.2 and 2.4.  This is the range I use most of the time. I didn't use the cs filter. When I go out shooting with the Thambar, most of the time I don't have any other lens with me. And most of the time I don't use the cs filter. I don't see so much difference between having it mounted or not and also I don't like the limitation in case that I want to stop down even more than usual.

I also love how the lens renders from 2.2. to 2.8. I have been playing with the filter quite a lot recently and my impression is that it softens things quite a lot especially in this range where it is a bit too much for me in most cases. It really depends on the presence of strong highlights in the scene as well.

Thanks a lot for sharing, still trying to get the hang of it 😁

Exactly what you describe: the cs filter softens even more, since the center is covered. That's  too much of a good thing for me. I love the Thambar with its unique rendering, but I also love some kind of object sharpness in the image, exactly the way, the Thambar delivers it, surrounded by bubbles, softness, light reflections etc.

Let me show this image as an example, just shot today in our garden: the plant in the foreground is "sharp", while the rest of the image is Thambar-blurry. Nobody can imitate, what the Thambar can, with any filters, lenses or whatever ...

I am 100% with you on this. Some kind of soft sharpness…  Thanks for illustrating it too!
