Advertisement Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 Hi Ernest, Take a look here Thambar-Crazy. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted June 13, 2018 Share #662 Posted June 13, 2018 More a thread bump than anything else but some recent stuff with the Thambar-M. I'm still using it as a general purpose 90 at mid-aperture and haven't tried a portrait for months. Anyway I quite like the clean, low contrast look I get for orchids. A Bee orchid at around F5.6 (maybe F4). Some more experimental snaps fooling around between orchid photos. I've always been aware that, at wider apertures, this lens can run a fine line between something interesting (especially in terms of the light) and something irredeemably naff (1970s kitsch at best). I've probably steered into the latter here but I still feel there is promise with this lens for what I have in my own mind. It will just take a while to get there. What I do know is that a more conventional lens wide-open isn't the look I'm seeking.
wattsy Posted June 21, 2018 Share #663 Posted June 21, 2018 Military orchid again. This time on film, Portra 400. You can compare with M 240 photos in post #650 in this thread, if you are inclined.

wattsy Posted August 21, 2018 Share #674 Posted August 21, 2018 (edited) Just to keep the thread rolling. This is a quick snap at around F2.8 and a little greater than the close focus distance (without filter). Edited August 21, 2018 by wattsy
mmradman Posted August 21, 2018 Share #675 Posted August 21, 2018 Just to keep the thread rolling. This is a quick snap at around F2.8 and 1m focus distance (without filter). Very nice portrait, it only suffers from away eye in focus - something that happens to me a lot.
wattsy Posted August 21, 2018 Share #676 Posted August 21, 2018 (edited) Very nice portrait, it only suffers from away eye in focus - something that happens to me a lot. Yes, it looks like that. The plane of focus is odd in as much as the hair on the near side is in sharper focus yet the far eye, as you point out, is (or looks) in sharper focus. Probably the angle I have the camera held in relation to the subject might explain that (or it's just some optical illusion to do with the different contrast in different parts of the scene). In truth, one of the things the Thambar teaches you is that precise (or conventional) focus no longer seems so important. Most of the portrait photos I have taken that I like best are ones where I have missed optimum focus on the eyes altogether. Unless picture is for the Passport or such like there is more to portrait than set pose and eyes in perfect focus. This would probably be applicable to portrait made with any lens.

Ian - Yes, better to value an image for its aesthetic, or emotional or expressive, impact rather than on the basis of technical considerations. _______________ Alone in Bangkok essay on BURN Magazine Nowhereman Instagram Edited August 21, 2018 by Nowhereman
wattsy Posted August 21, 2018 Share #679 Posted August 21, 2018 (edited) With hindsight, I think the photo I just posted has too much contrast. I've gone a bit overboard in the post processing. I tend to prefer more subtlety, something the Thambar-M (with its inherent low contrast) is suited to – as long as you avoid the temptation to try and correct it in post. Again, around F2.8 or so without the filter. Edited August 21, 2018 by wattsy
ianman Posted August 21, 2018 Share #680 Posted August 21, 2018 Beautiful portraits Mr Watts!!! I also prefer the less contrasty one.
