Accessory "must haves" for new owner

if he's not going to use flash (I don't), then get the thumbs up that screws in securely. I had the original thumbs up that slides into the hot shoe, and it came out somewhere without my knowledge. Now I have the thumbs up that can't come out because of the screw. And for what it's worth, I don't like the hand grip accessory. I'd rather have my Q around my neck with my custom Luigi strap, so I don't need the handgrip anyway.

Thanks for yours. I read about the insecurity of the old Thumbs Up design, just as you describe. The new one appears to be a very well made and more secure variation. But even as one somewhat desensitized to the Leica price point, $179 on ebay for this device vs. $125 or so for the Leica hand grip makes the latter seem almost "reasonable."  My boy uses a wrist strip on his Q. Strikes me that the hand grip would be a better complement.

Thanks for yours. I read about the insecurity of the old Thumbs Up design, just as you describe. The new one appears to be a very well made and more secure variation. Everyone has their own preference but don't rule out the Thumbs-up with a wrist strap - I find it works very well and don't feel the need for the hand grip.

the only accessories I have for my 2.5 year old Q are some black gaffer tape to lock the diopter adjustment wheel in place, an old nylon Leica M strap, and a lens protection filter.

 

Perhaps I should have bought a leather case as the body has quite a few scuff marks now

I like the Arte did Mano half case with battery door and the thumbs up grip. For straps, I have a Tie Her Up (now rock n roll) wrist strap and neck strap (the climbing rope versions) that I alternate between depending on where I'm heading.

wrist strap means that hand is always in use. I used a wrist strap on all my other cameras that weighed much more than the Q, but ditched them in favor of a long neck strap when I got the lightweight Q. Aside from being so light that it doesn't bother my neck or back, it's just way more convenient to have the Q at my waist or back when not in use which frees up both hands.
