Lightroom = Darkroom. Don't 'upgrade'

Hi Tim

Sorry to hear about this - nasty stuff - I hope it all pans out okay and you get back what you had before.

A lesson to all of us not to ignore that backup message :-( (I'm currently backing up my Aperture library as we speak!).

Good Luck!

I suspect half the forum is running back ups this morning!

Thanks Jono & Wilson,

I think I have identified a subconscious reason as to why I don't backup my Library Database often enough: the message suggesting it always pops up just as I am trying to get something done NOW... so I ignore it on the basis that I will do it later. Also on the basis that fuzzily in my stupid head I am confusing the Library Database File (about 120mb) with the library itself (about 100 gig...) so I think, 'oh, I can't do that now, it'll take forever and anyway I back it up once a month using Mac Backup.'

More clear thinking and more procedure in future. But I still think Adobe need to watch this one: no upgrade should corrupt a database, all upgrades should be simply reversible and all databases should be automatically backed up first.

I am minded, whilst in self-justificatory mood, of why I don't use Photoshop CS2 any more: ever since I installed CS3 trial and it it timed out, CS2 has not worked properly, asking for re-install. So I just use CS, which is still on my drive, and from which I never got around to migrating my third-party filters anyway! I think Adobe's upgrades need a bit more thought...

Best

Tim

Tim - glad it's working out. From where I stand, LR 1.1 is very much worth the upgrade - and I've come to the conclusion that money spent on CS3 was worth it too... It's tough though as over the last few months with the 2 M8 bodies and software purchases and the rest, there's been a lot of cash flowing out... Heigh ho - it's the hidden cost of going digital...

On the downside, I still find the noise tools completely useless. I have a nice shot taken at ISO 2500, and I can slide the noise sliders from full left to full right, both, without seeing any difference in the image. What is up with that?

In general, although I am quite fond of Lightroom, I find that the sliders have too little range.

.. It depends on what combinations that you use them in, I really push all my images and have no problems chucking things out of kilter ar remaining within the gamma range............the noise and sharpening are heaps better but nowhere near third party stuff, still a bit Aunt Mary,...........if small changes need to be done more than adequent, view the image 1:1 and a have a play then you will spot the differences

Like a couple of you I find the noise reduction feature in LR to be quite useless. However, I don't know if CS3 was a big improvement over CS2 etc. in this matter but I'm finding the filter under Filter>Noise>Reduce Noise to be very effective.

OK, after many hours of messing about I got an unsolicited email from a very nice Adobe support chap (ON SUNDAY) who suggested I yousend my .lrdb file to him for repair. I did. He repaired it. It works.

Who else offers that sort of help at the weekend, let alone during working hours?

Kudos...

The team at Pixel Genius. I had a little problem with their Sharpeners and got a reply within 20 minutes, also today (Sunday). Good Stuff. Glad your problem is fixed Tim.

Adobe help desk seems to be completely polarised between the "good morning how can I be of absolutely no assistance to you at all today and I will only talk to you after you have given me your credit card number, which I will then charge by the microsecond for my useless and patronising advice" to other guys who are very pleasant, unbelievably helpful and bend their rules to get you out of a hole. My old external hard drive in France got partially corrupted last year. After Apple replaced my faulty iMac for the first of four times, on reloading, the one thing which would not reinstall was PSE4, which I had received as a download upgrade to PSE3. I was way out of time to ask for re-download but they reset my account with no quibbles. Human nature I suppose - some good, some bad.

Glad you got it all sorted Tim.

Oh yes, I even back it up while it's backing up.

BUT... my version 1.0 database was working but corrupt and would not have backed up even if I had tried to. I think due to a power cut here two weeks ago. On the support forums there's a lot of evidence that many people are having this issue of databases which are broken but functional, and there's even talk that a database fix tool will be released soon. As one unhappy punter put it, what's the point of running an integrity check if there's nothing you can do when it fails?

Glad you got it sorted out. Judging from the Adobe Lightroom User to User Forum, Adobe seem to be very supportive of this issue at the moment. You're absolutely right though that we need a tool to fix the database and I have wondered myself what would happen if the integrity check failed.

Love your Venice shots, incidentally. My own with the old 20D fade into insignificance ...

Cheers

Thanks Martin, though I am now finding Lightroom astonishingly slow (about a minute to zoom into an image....) so still not quite right!

You do your own Venice shots down - there are some really lovely ones there and what's amazing is that you and I both picked up on some of the same minor details - two or three of the shots are non-obvious and almost identical. Spooky!

Get a RAID 5 array and hit that backup button every time you open Lightroom. Also, save a copy of each imported DNG to an external drive as part of your import workflow (its an option in the import settings).

Thanks for the reinforcement! It certainly struck me that we might have a common glove fetish :D

I agree that LR is still a bit slow but not THAT slow. I must say it has really been a revolution for my workflow and general file management. Not quite a full DAM but a step in the right direction.

Tim,

Glad you managed to get things sorted. I upgraded to LR1.1 and it didn't just corrupt my database...it wiped it out and replaced it with a clean version. Fortunately, due to some big issues with disk drivers (a Vista issue) recently, I had learned my lesson already, and did a backup first. I shutdown LR, copied the backup database over the clean database, restarted LR and the database converted without a problem.

As a result of those Vista issues, I now have all my images on a pair of Raid 1 disks and a backup on a another USB drive. I use the LR import workflow to automatically make the backup...however, I wish it didn't insist on creating a 'Imported On....' directory within the backup directory.

Glad to hear you averted disaster John. Did you turn off 'Write changes to XMP automatically'? It makes it run much faster!

I never turned it on in LR 1.1. If it was an option in LR 1.0 then I turned it off there. Strangely, the upgrade copied over the user options already set despite thinking that I would want to start again with a clean database. Following your advise here, I won't be turning on that option!

Cheers,

John
