Hi all,

Pretty sure it doesn’t exist, but is there any way to use the SL in crop mode with full frame lenses? I know it reverts to APSC using TL lenses, but it would be useful to be able to exploit a crop factor with my 24-90 to get a little extra reach occasionally.

Thanks.

You can also crop your image when you're back home. You can not tell the cropping done by the camera from the cropping done by your computer.

That's just what I was about to ask! Thanks, Pop.

Did the OP mean "crop factor" as in 24-90 gets multiplied by 1.5 ? ;)

"to get a little extra reach occasionally."

Yes I did. The responses led me to check images taken at the 90 end of the zoom, at both full frame and APSC sizes and there is a noticeable additional reach.

Well, if 280 mm doesn't get you close enough to your object, you can always crop the picture, but then you lose pixels and resolution.  Usually crop factor is what we call the "extra reach" that you get when using a lens that could cover full frame on an APS-C or M43 camera, using just the center of the image (the best part, after all) and generating an image with about the same number of pixels as a full frame camera.  You could crop an SL or M10 image down to 6 MPx to obtain the same extra reach as putting the lens on an M43 camera, but I think the M43 image would look better and would certainly be more robust.

“Reach” when cropping simply means it’s enlarged.

Cropping the SL to APSC in camera is no different than cropping on your computer.

The TL2 achieves the same with a full 24MP in the APSC sized sensor so you end up with a higher resolution file.

There is no more “reach”, just more resolution for the same field of view.

Just to clarify: aps_c mode on the SL at 280mm and 280mm on the TL2 [24MP] wont be the same right ? on the TL2 it would have a lot more reach ? and its 24MP

the 90-280 on the TL2 will function as if it is approx 140-420mm with the same pixel resolution as the SL.

It wouldn't have any more "reach", that is, the field of view with the SL at 280 when set to APS-C is the same as the field of view on the TL2 with the 280mm.  In that sense, it's the same reach.  However, you would have additional pixels available for more cropping in the TL2, and the 90-280mm lens is of high enough quality that it wouldn't be "empty" magnification, that is, the lens under the right circumstances will easily out-resolve the SL.  The extra pixels in the TL2 would help some (though probably not as much as the 10mp vs. 24mp indicates since you will see diffraction effects earlier and less per-pixel image sharpness).
