What M lenses have you tried and would you post or provide a link to some full size samples, as there seems to be a lack of available samples for people to judge. Thanks.

Will certainly try and post some shots when have some time. My M lenses are 35mm Summilux, 35 and 50 Summicron pre Asph, and Noctilux. Tried briefly the only remaining R lens I have, the 50mm Summicron with am R to M adapter, and had the least vignetting seen so far plus the added advantage can get closer to subject. That might be the one I end up using.

Not exactly the same experience, but it should not be a surprise that some FF (24x36) lenses are OK with the X1D

 

I have used (the best manual) Nikon lenses (55 mm 3.5 Micro, 105mm 2.8 Micro, 28mm Ais, 200mm 4.0 Ais, 20mm G 1.8) with a Fuji Gfx50 (same sensor format as the X1D, if not same Sony sensor), and those lenses are not as good (but by a small margin and used at a lower aperture) than the good Leica lenses

 

Lenses were mostly used at F8 (their optimum value, with Leica Lenses it should be F5.6), and vignetting was almost not existent or restricted to the extreme corners

 

I could make crisp 1m X 1m pictures (40" X 40") with no problem, handheld

 

Now, mainly for weight reasons, I am using Sony A7RII with Leica M or Leica M compatible lenses

I did not do a detailed comparison, but I do not see any real difference, especially after post processing : sensor may be a little less good, but lenses are better

PS : Main problem are wide angle lenses.

The best suggestion I can give is Voigtlander 15mm version III (version III is important) with which there are no problems on most of the picture. I did not try their 10mm and 12mm

My observations, just tooling around, and generally shooting wide open are as follows. 

 

WATE - some vignetting, usuable without some post processing. Would be too much hassle for me. 

24 Summilux - heavy vignetting, so I would rate it as not having mini-medium format coverage

28 Elmarit - heavy vignetting, so I would rate it as not having mini-medium format coverage

35 Summilux ASPH - heavy vignetting, so I would rate it as not having mini-medium format coverage

50 APO - minimal vignetting... renders gorgeously... almost a Noctilux like dreaminess at f/2 on the larger sensor, but sharper. I am really looking forward to giving this combination a good flogging in the field 

Nocti 0.95 - this is an interesting one. It vignettes "fully" (eg blocks the frame at the edges, not just darker) at the outside edges but once the vignette stops the middle has great pop and colour. It can't be used without cropping though and only the interest factor of shooting at 0.95 on a mini-medium format sensor make it a special interest lens - for general use, it does not have mini-medium format coverage

Summicron 75 APO - Miminal vignetting and gorgeous rendering. 

 

So, from my mucking about so far the 50 and 75 Crons do a great job and have close enough to full sensor coverage that they can be used in a generalist capacity, while the wides vignette so heavily you will be cropping/using heavy post processing. 

 

A bit of a shame, as it is fast wides that I wanted to work most on the X1D as I use them often when I travel. Curiously, this means that the M may survive in my kit as almost a specialist travel camera, especially while there is no fast, wide for the CL. 

 

This mucking around process has also given me more of an appreciation for the X1D's sensor, which is lovely in many ways, but the out of camera colours are especially pleasant to my eye - the best I have seen.

By chance, anyone shot the 28/1.4 on the X1D?

 

The 28 SX is nearly telecentric in design and renders beautifully. I am hoping it throws a circle bigger than the 28 Summicron.

 

While I am dreaming, anyone tried a 50/1 on the X1D?

 

FWIW, the X1D sensor with Bladware is just fantastic. But I could never get comfortable with the XCD fly-by-wire lenses. My point here is that the X1D might offer a special canvas for some of our most special, beloved Leica glass.

If I understand Ming's post correctly.... the limitations (other than image circle) are due to not having focal plane shutter in X1D since it relies on the shutter in the lens (or you will need to use the electronic shutter  with slow read out).

 

Wondering someone can make an adapter with a built in shutter for such usage.

And here's one with Summicron-M APO 2/50. The vignetting is quite minor and easily correctable with this lens, unlike the Nocti.

This shot with the Nocti here is a 5300x5300 crop out of 8272x6200. You can push it out a little bit further and dial in more vignetting adjustment and it'd still be ok. I'd venture to say you can get 30-35 usable megapixels out of the 50.

Overall image quality (sharpness, bokeh rendering, etc) appears on-par with being on the M. I haven't noticed any degradation when used on the X1D, and I do prefer the skin tones straight out of the X1D.

 

Another thing I should mention: my focusing (zoomed in using EVF) hit rate is about 80% with X1D+Nocti - the 20% are mostly due to back and forth movement or re-frame. The hit rate on M (rangefinder, no EVF) is lower, maybe 60%.

I am using Noctilux 0.95 in X1D, my first adaptor was used with some issues. I am waiting for new one. I like image form this combination. There is some images from old used adaptor.
