earleygallery Posted November 5, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 5, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today was the annual London to Brighton veteran car run, for cars made prior to 1905. It's amazing to see these vehicles being driven on the roads. People come from all over the world with their cars for this event and fortunately it was a dry and mostly sunny day today for them. Graham (G4FUJ) Posted November 6, 2017 Share #3 Posted November 6, 2017 Lovely! Some of my Morgan pals were at the Jolly Tanners, getting breakfast and spectating there (it's become a "go to" location). Unfortunately, this year's event was not without mishap: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-surrey-41879353
earleygallery Posted November 6, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted November 6, 2017 I saw some Morgans there! Nice spot to gather. The accident was sad, no further news yet about the injured. I was talking to someone around noon and saying there seemed to be a lack of cars coming through, obviously held up by the accident. I've no idea how it happened but I saw a couple of near misses because of impatient cars cutting in or overtaking the veterans - people just don't think what those cars are like to drive or how easily (not) some of them can stop. A shame, especially on one of the better days they've had for the run.
Graham (G4FUJ) Posted November 6, 2017 Share #5 Posted November 6, 2017 I agree about other motorists. A story related to me from a VSCC member was the length of time trying to source the correct brass headlamps for his car, measured in years. Two days later, out on a gentle run and some idiot in a Range Rover overtook, then stopped rapidly because he wanted to ask about the car - which was now embedded in the back of said RR. Exit the brass lamps of course.
earleygallery Posted November 11, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted November 11, 2017 Apparently the accident happened due to brake failure on the Benz, going down Reigate Hill (steep and twisty) and the driver lost control. It does seem an odd choice of route for such old cars although the organisers say the route was tested with Veteran cars before the official run and it was deemed safe (the usual route had to be changed this year due to major roadworks). No news on the injured though.
abrewer Posted December 22, 2017 Share #7 Posted December 22, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I looked at the photos first and was wondering what camera you were using. The colors are vivid but not Leica's. It's remarkable how you learn the nuances of the different manufacturers with time. Looks like everybody is having fun, wish I was one of the guests here!
