WATE Menu 'stuck' ?

This may be normal but today I fitted my new WATE lens for the first time. As expected the WATE Menu appeared and I could select focal length.

Now however the menu is stuck. No matter which lens is fitted the WATE menu remains. The camera recognises other 6 bit lenses for what they are, so useability is not affected.

I assumed the WATE menu would only appear when the WATE was fitted.

I have tried reloading the firmware. No effect.

Is this normal?

Bad news i'm afraid Chris, no it is not normal.

When i fit the WATE i get the menu, when i fit any other lens the screen stays blank.

Try removing the battery for a few minutes and see if this can reset everything.

Regards

Eric

Chris, I had the same problem. The camera detected the correct lens but still displayed the WATE menu. I tried turning on and off, removing battery, cleaning lens sensor etc etc all to no avail. A few minutes later it just got better on its own!!!

Just a glitch I think!

It's a firmware bug Chris

I don't believe it's to do with the led's, and I'm not quite sure how it happens.

I've got two bodies, and it's happened with both of them - and then stopped again - and then started again.

It happens when you are changing from IR on to IR off and vice versa (which is why Guy won't have seen it, he keeps his on all the time).

Don't panic - I'm pretty sure that it'll get fixed in the end, and in the meantime the testing I've done shows me that the exif is showing the correct lens, and the compensation is right as well, so it's simply an irritation you'll get when swapping from IR off to on on the Lens detection bit.

Feeling better now?

:)

If you set lens detection to "on" there is no menu even with a WATE. The camera uses an 18mm setting as a middle ground. To get the menu you have to set lens detection to "on+uv/ir". You should see the 16-18-21mm menu as you exit the settings menu.

HI Carl

Spefically, what happens is this - put a WATE on your camera, go to lens detection and select On+UV/IR - you will get the WATE menu.

Then, fit another lens (turn the camera off first if you wish).

go back into the menu and choose On+UV/IR - you'll get the WATE menu again.

This may go on for some days / weeks, even if you never put the WATE on the camera again - then it'll suddenly go back to normal.

I've tried and tried to get some handle on what switches this 'on' and 'off' but I can't. I've got two bodies, and it's happened intermittently with both of them.

It doesn't appear to matter any more than the zebra stripes, but it's a bit disconcerting.

Hey:) I did not know that; all my lenses wear filters; I'm too lazy to take them off :o

Thanks for all the replies. I'm now inclined to ignore the problem which, for some of you, was self correcting. I enjoyed a stormy afternoon in Greenwich with my M8 today-wonderful light and no thoughts of the WATE menu. I'll run a full discharge of the battery overnight by way of a hard reset. Another one for Leica and the next firmware upgrade, perhaps?

Why is it that you can't use the WATE without a filter and select the focal length. Seems like you only get the focal length menu when you select UV/IR. I have a CV 15mm coded (but the camera does not recognize it as anything) and want to use it without a filter.

Jeffrey,

If your CV15 is correctly coded as a WATE it will bring up the WATE menu when you set Lens detection to On plus IR. You then select 16mm from the list. Subsequently 16mm will also be set when Lens detection On is chosen though the system always defaults to 18mm if the lens is changed or its focal length altered. If any or all of this is not occuring you need to check the nature and accuracy of your hand coding - just moving the mount slightly can help. As a quick check the focal length currently recognised by the camera should appear in the preview screen when the Info button is pressed. eg. If 18mm shows you have successfully coded your CV15 but not selected 16mm in the WATE menu.

Regards,

Chris
