Hello. I hope this is in the right forum. Sorry if not.

I am struggling to set the film Speed on this. There are three windows on the top of the meter. one is for din. The other 2 for film Speed. I'm trying to set the film Speed at 1600. I can do this on  one window but am unsure the purpose of the other window.

Also, the lettering is very small and hard to read, I find and it seems hard to accurately line up the correct film speed as a result

Any advice would be welcome. Richard.

I have sorted it.. I see that the two asa windows have different settings to select. I was just struggling to see it because the writing is very small. Richard.

Hello Richard,

"Small" is the reason.

The meter which reads from EV 2 to EV 18 @ ISO 100/21 is physically not that large.

An interesting light level to choose since EV 2 @ ISO 100/21 is only 1/6 of a stop (More or less.) away from a light level of 1 Foot Candle or 10.764 Lux.

ISO (Formerly ASA) numbers are physically larger than DIN numbers.

Metrawatt used 2 windows for ASA numbers & 1 window for DIN numbers.

Because the 2 ASA number windows do not always agree (Interpolating the 2 different number sets.) I use the DIN number equivalent which is all on 1 scale.

DIN system has other advantages also. It is too bad that not that many people use DIN today.

Best Regards,

Michael

I just use the same film speed all the time, I set my meter once and don’t have to worry about reading those tiny numbers ever again. :)

Actually, in all seriousness, the setting can change when putting the camera sideways into a bag, if you use a bag check the meter every now and then.

My MR light meter broke shortly I got it with the M3 camera which I purchased. I tried to fix it myself by using an online description to clean its contacts inside, but I do not recommend to do it - other that I got a bit more insight how this MR meter is constructed, it was a big waste of my time, and in the end it still didn't work. I am using now my Android cellphone based LightMeter app which works even more precisely than the MR meter. And by not having the MR sitting on the hotshoe of my M3, it opened this space for an external viewfinder.

I used to buy "as-is" MR meters and try to repair them. I was able to fix more than half, but when one has bad corrosion, broken meter movement, or broken plastic parts I give up. Still, when you can pick them up for around $10 is isn't a bad gamble.

...yes - especially since working ones seem to go between $150-200 on ebay. But broken ones sell for less than $30.
