Since you already bought the Nikon I'm not going to bore you with another suggestion for this or that Leica R. I will merely point out that there are a number of Leica lenses (65mm and longer, ones which have removable heads to use on a Visoflex)) which can be used on the Nikon body with a simple Visoflex->Nikon adapter. Just though I'd mention it.

Can I ask why you like 55/3.5? Not knowing much about Nikkor lenses, I got 50mm F2 AI as general purpose lens. So far I am ok with its performance (haven’t tested on digital yet) but I would like to have one ā€œkeeperā€ Nikkor prime.Ā

Partially nostalgia (one of my uncles loaned me his for at least two years in the late '60s/early '70s, along with his 85mm f/1.8)Ā and I fell in love with the ability to focus down to 1:2 with no accessories then. And also because it is a very fine performer, actually nice to use as a normal 50mm and really good flat field performance when down in the 1:3 to 1:1 range. The later f/2.8 version, and even later 60mm versions, are supposedly better performers, but IĀ like the rendering qualities of the Micro-NikkorĀ 55mm f/3.5 pre-AI lens a little more. It works well on digital digital sensors too.Ā Same story for the Nikkor-QĀ 85mm f/1.8 ... šŸ™‚

The Nikkor 50mm f/2 AI is a very good lens, but the nicest rendering in a fast Nikon normal is with the f/1.2 model 50mm lenses they offered. The old "nocti" Nikkor 58mm also ... but itĀ has become something of a classic and a collectible. Voigtlander makes a new 58mm (theĀ Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL II) which is reputedly as par with the classic Nikkor and styled to look the same; it's what I'd buy if I was in the market for a new lens for my F.Ā

Other truly excellent and classic Nikkor lenses include the 105mm f/2.5, 28mm f/2 (AI or later),Ā 24mm f/2.8 AI-S, the 180mm f/2.8 ED-IF AI-S, and theĀ 300mm f/4. The Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 is also in the top category based on my experience with it.Ā

Thanks. This info isĀ treasure trove! I just looked up and KEH is selling the 55 at $70! This is what I am liking about FM2. There are many lens options reasonably cheap. Not to count 58mm 1.2 Noct which is $4000+ Ouch!Ā
To meĀ Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL II looks good but I already have Konica 57mm 1.4 Hexanon which I love on Konica T2 (and digital M). Mainly nostalgia since it was my first lens (bought used in 1996).Ā
