stuny Posted August 28, 2017 Share #1  Posted August 28, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Barbara found a raptor preserve not too far away which we visited on Saturday.  In the 90 minutes we were there people arrived with injured birds three times.  This black vulture was drawn to the calls of a recovering turkey vulture, recuperating in  one of the huge cages.  Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted August 30, 2017 Author Share #5  Posted August 30, 2017 Michael -  Thank you. I took this, along with birds in the sanctuary, in north central New Jersey. turkey vultures have been around in the area for a very long time, but black vultures have only moved here relatively recently from the south. Being the most populous state, the "road kill" provides plenty of food for both species. Â Which is interesting because we are South of there & I have never seen any Black Vultures where we are. Â We do have Turkey Vultures & an occasional Bald Eagle or 2. Â We've often seen turkey vultures soaring virtually everywhere in the US. Â I can't be certain I've seen black vultures before, but most certainly not roosting or walking in the area.
