I think it was just a precaution. I didn't see the lens before. Bought it after the owner consigned it to Popflash. Under non-ideal conditions, it hunts and can be slow, but once it locks it is quite accurate.

Until recently, preemptive repairs were not provided; a lens had to first suffer a breakdown. Likewise, the earlier replacement motors weren't permanently fixed; that happened later on, and now can be preventively installed, but at owner cost.

Tony Rose at Popflash can indeed be trusted to provide any details. Good guy.

Also curious if anyone has tried low light with the S 24 or 35 on the SL.

I used both on the SL for landscape, on a tripod, both with very low light or with heavy ND filters on the lens. In my experience, they focus perfectly up to, i.e., a 6 stop ND in daytime, or a 10 stop ND under strong sun. AF is not as fast with S lenses as it is with the 24-90mm or 90-280mm SL, and it might hunt a second in low light, but it definitely works.

If you shoot landscape on a tripod, or if your subject don't move too fast handheld, I definitely recommend focus magnification (always, but especially in low light).

Best regards,

Vieri

It's hard to know.  I autofocus with the joystick, then rock back and forth for a bit to get the best focus.  The reduction ratio is about 2.5:1, and the indicated distance is 60 cm, but most of that is the lens, and the camera and lens are between me and the flowers.

This is 4 years after the last reply, lets see what happens, I am a long time M user and moved to the SL2S just recently, I also loved the rendering of the S lenses, so I got me the adapter S to SL. I just purchased 2 S lenses the 24 and today I got the 70mm. Before I bought it I checked with Leica if the motor has been replaced and it was. I mounted on my SL2s and I see the back and forth "playing" that in some threads have been mentioned. What I also noticed is that when the lens goes to the minimum focusing distance, a whirring sound starts and the lens won't focus anymore, I have to manually move the lens and then it catches movement again, focus and I can take a picture.

Looking at your expertise in S lenses, is this the focus motor issue or anything else? I got the lens in a pretty good price and hate it to return it if I can find a good solution as I called Leica and told me I have to send the lens to them and they will sent it to Germany and I am looking t around $600 USD for repairs at a minimum since it is over a year since the focus motor was replaced.

Thank you guys

Looks like normal behaviour for the S-lenses on SL. Enjoy shooting!
