Having a nightmare printing in either PS or Lightroom

I agree, not using IP is a hassle, and I believe you when you say using IP is not. But does it also give different results?

For myself it does give differant results.Previously I have never been able to get consistent results which could well be because of lack of knowledge / poor technique ,lots of reasons. IP solves that problem for me . Jeff Schewe who is a world class fine Art Printer will create print quality the majority can only dream about without IP. I am the first to admit I will never be that good or even close whatever system I use. However IP makes BrianP a better printer with less hassle, wasted paper etc,so from my perspective that’s all that matters.

George DeWolfe is a highly regarded b/w printer. He ran tests over a 3 month period using IP and several other processes....QTR, Piezography, and Epson's ABW mode...and concluded that IP provided the most consistent quality, in addition to other benefits. This was done some time ago, however, and all processes have likely improved since then. See the 'Printing' section at the end of this article..

I have also found that IP gives me more consistent quality results than when I used LR's print module. I didn't run scientific tests, but clearly the combination of better profiles, better soft-proofing, automated print settings (avoiding user error as well as Apple/Adobe color management screw-ups) have assisted, probably along with whatever other tech benefits the software incorporates. And my workflow is simpler than ever.

Before I left home I printed off three A3+ (2 color and 1 B&W) using my Epson P807 printer and using Epson exhibition papers with the image Nest software. I am no expert in printing but it worked flawlessly and I am very happy with the end results. The prints were for my coffee table portfolio books :) :)

I made loads of terrific prints using LR and the Epson print driver. Sometimes we don't know what we don't know... or see. And sometimes it's worth the effort and/or cost to use another method, sometimes not. Depends on goals and preferences. No right or wrong.

And as usual, the user is almost always more important than the tools used, given at least competent gear, whether photographing or printing. If those tools help the user accomplish his/her goals more easily, even better

I’m getting second thoughts because:

- there’s a 30 days money back guarantee and I think I can better opt for that than judge it from a demo that does not seem to print

- it turns out to be $ 895 indeed for my 3800

I have one question though; all reviewers praise the consistency enormously. But isn’t inconsistency also caused by unfrequent printing? EPSON has expiration dates on its cartridges, did you ever notice possible influence of age of cartridges on inconsistent results?

Inconsistency can result from dozens of factors in an overall print workflow.

Always good to run a test print now and then if not printing frequently.... mostly to avoid clogs. And best to run a nozzle check before any important print session. Cartridges should be ok unless long out of date. Shaking them gently can't hurt.

I normally run a test print about every two weeks if for whatever reason I have not done any printing.I would not site my printer close to a radiator or other heat source. A nozzle check can not do any harm. I have never had any serious problems with Epson printers mechanically. I always store unused cartridges in a cool dry environment. It was a fairly easy decision for myself after buying a P 800 plus role feed attachment. I had several very useful exchanges on this forum with Jeff S, who like myself has no particular axe to grind and will just give an honest opinion on a piece of kit we have paid good money for. As you say there is a 30 day money back guarantee, nice to have but I doubt you will need it.
