I have shot almost exclusively with an M7 and 28mm Summicron for the last two months, mainly in fast moving and low(ish) light. Even at f2, focus at close distances can be tricky and so an external VF is not practical. But with glasses I can only see roughly the middle 2/3 of the frame without moving my eyes around the finder (not practical in a rush).

Despite this, it seems to be possible to work successfully even when shooting quickly. Sometimes it is viable to align with at least one frame line, but even when this is not possible you learn to estimate framing even without seeing the frame edges in the finder. It is neither ideal nor perfect, but somehow it works...

What about a dioptre? Anyway, the framelines are a rough indication anyway, I even use a 24 mostly without EVF or accessory finder. It is just a matter of getting to know the field of view of the lens.

+1

I also use the 24mm f3.8 Elmar-M without an external viewfinder, even though I have the CV 25mm external finder

  • 2 weeks later...

I have the 28 Summaron with my 240 and I found it difficult to compose. Have to move my head side to side to see the frame lines. In the end I decided to just use the central frame lines (not sure what they are for, 50 maybe?) first then, if I want to, check the sides, otherwise I take the shot.
