sinjun Posted July 24, 2017 Share #1 Posted July 24, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) When looking through my photos I find that a large proportion of my favourites are taken with my 40 mm Summicron-c – there is just something about the rendering of that little lens. However, the 50 mm focal length suits me better. So my question is: do any of the 50 mm Summicrons have similar rendering to the Summicron-c?
Advertisement Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Hi sinjun, Take a look here 50 mm Summicron similar to 40 mm Summicron-c?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ko.Fe. Posted July 25, 2017 Share #2 Posted July 25, 2017 I used to have Collapsible and then Rigid, followed by IV for now. Just before getting IV I purchased Rokkor CLE which is same optically as Summicron-C, but different slightly in coatings. I see no big difference in 40/2 and 50/2 IV on color film in rendering. On digital M-E 40/2 gives less neutral bokeh sometimes. My bet it is Summicron III to match Summicron-C. On film.
lct Posted July 25, 2017 Share #3 Posted July 25, 2017 Not sure how my 50/2 v3 rendered exactly when i had one but my 50/2 v4 and 35/2 v4 are close to the 40/2 on digital. Here on Epson R-D1. 6MP only though. • 50/2 v4: https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-dL9ZXtp/0/60b5486c/O/i-dL9ZXtp.jpg • 40/2: https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-gGpjMnP/0/74648eb9/O/i-gGpjMnP.jpg

Just a thought, maybe 40mm actually suits you better and that's why a "large proportion of your (my) favourites" are taken with the 40mm? Maybe you "want" to be a 50mm person? You may want to check out the Summarit-M 50 mm 1:2.4 ... or the older 50 mm 1:2.5 which despite the different nominal lens speeds is the very same lens in just a different barrel. By the way, I love the 40mm also on my Kolari mod Sony A7S.

lct Posted July 25, 2017 Share #8 Posted July 25, 2017 [...] By the way, I love the 40mm also on my Kolari mod Sony A7S. Interesting indeed. Haven't tried it on mine yet. I like much the tiny CV 40/2.8 as well, in a different style though.
magosak Posted July 26, 2017 Share #9 Posted July 26, 2017 .. Bokeh can be a bit odd sometimes ... I totally agree. I did some comparison recently with 50 ASPH and 50 APO I have. I know it's not a fair comparison but despite its size advantage I like the 40 a lot less since then.
