I'll probably take a shot at cleaning and sealing my MP in the next few weeks, hoping others who have done the same can share their techniques. It seems pretty straightforward to remove the rubber eyepiece, back out the screws and clean things up. Though I'm curious about what others have used for a sealer and how effective their remedies have been.

"HCB" is the initials of a very famous photographer named Henri Cartier-Bresson, who used Leica cameras almost exclusively.

I don't know if this is even a serious question, but I'd strongly suggest that you send your very nice Leica camera to a professional for this sort of work your are considering: there are several folks mentioned frequently to do this work, both in USA and abroad.

Very serious. I'd encourage anyone with even a modicum of mechanical aptitude to diagnose, fix and learn for themselves whenever possible.

For anyone who's interested in cleaning their viewfinder themselves.

This is about 7 years of dust accumulation.

Though it isn't really all that big of a deal. When your eye is up against the viewfinder it has a negligible impact on usability.

Here's a shot of the gap, you can see the space between the body and the viewfinder cover plate

IMG 0437

After removing the rubber surround, three small screws hold on the viewfinder cover plate.

These screws are quite small...

The viewfinder cover plate has a lens with magnification, it's not just a flat piece of glass.

More dust...

All cleaned up...

And back together again. The process of disassembly and cleaning is simple and straightforward.

Thanks for this! I have an MP where the VF is filled with dust in the rear part of the VF. Can I ask a couple of questions in regards to how you did this?

1. How did you get the rubber surround off?

2. How did you clean VF? I assume using a bulb blower wouldn't be too smart, since I presume it might cause the dust to go further into/inside the viewfinder?

The surround will come off if you pull it to the left. The viewfinder was cleaned with optical cleaning spray and a microfiber cloth.

Sorry to revive this topic, but has enybody tried to seal the finder with success after having it cleaned like 14401 did ? :) My M7 is a serious dustsucker, and I'd be glad to stop this annoyance one day...

Yes, I did. I used a small amount of black silicone sealant (Loctite 5910)  to close the gap between body and cover plate. No more dust behind the cover plate lens since years. Worked a treat. The sealant remains soft and flexible, so removing the sealant should not be an issue if needed.
