TRIago Posted July 10, 2017 Share #1 Â Posted July 10, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) So, I was just playing around with my two 50's. These are just quick tests and I will upload more later on. Â Rigid @ F2: Â V5 @ F2: Â Rigid @ F4: Â V5 @ F4: Â Rigid @ F8: Â V5 @ F8: Â Â To my eyes, the Rigid is sharper wide open in the center. While the V5 does a better job on the edges. The Rigid is just amazing. Â I'm no pro in doing comparisons, I just kept all the same settings in the camera (M9), tripod and cable release. These are raw converted to Jpgs with zero post in Lightroom. Â Will post more later. Â

MISH Posted July 10, 2017 Share #2  Posted July 10, 2017 Looks like I better keep my rigid   Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
tamas Posted July 10, 2017 Share #3  Posted July 10, 2017 To my unreliable eyes it looks equally sharp at F8.  But then I might be biased as I love mine.

rpittal Posted July 12, 2017 Share #6  Posted July 12, 2017 All I see is vignetting from Rigid even at f8.   I always liked a touch of vignetting; I suppose from the old days under an enlarger when blocking corners with a waving card was standard practice. However, it has its place and not appropriate for all pics (I especially like even soft tones with no vignetting, while harsher light seems to go better with darker corners). Regards, Bob

TRIago Posted July 12, 2017 Author Share #8 Â Posted July 12, 2017 All I see is vignetting from Rigid even at f8. Sure thing. I will post some close up tests as well later on. But I am still amazed by the amount of resolution wide open the Rigid has.
tobey bilek Posted July 12, 2017 Share #9 Â Posted July 12, 2017 Sharp sharp sharp. Â Nice, Â but compare the clarity of V5 at any stop. Â V5 clear winner. Â If you don`t see it, Â a new monitor is called for.

bocaburger Posted July 12, 2017 Share #13 Â Posted July 12, 2017 I sold my rigid long ago, but I have a collapsible in LTM with as close to pristine glass as you'll ever find, and a v4 which is the same optics as the v5, and I am amazed by how well the older lens stacks up in practical use. Not pretty but full of life, that is for sure. Pics are just for the sake of testing. But thanks, tho.
4X5B&W Posted July 13, 2017 Share #15  Posted July 13, 2017 What amazes me is the amount of lens flare (at all of the tested apertures) of the V5, from the moon in the first series.  The Rigid has much less flare.....kinda surprising given the more up to date coatings of the V5.  Re-purchased a Rigid recently to go with my MM1 Monochrom, an excellent combination! As you can see demonstrated in these images, the lower contrast of the rigid works better for the tonal range of B&W.

Uncontrolled variable. Better just to take pictures.  s-a

semi-ambivalent Posted July 17, 2017 Share #20 Â Posted July 17, 2017 They were both taken with no hood, again for the sake of testing only. Â Â Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk A hood would have had no effect on the clouds. The clouds, on the other hand, have a veiling, flaring effect on the light passing through them. That is why I mentioned them, not as a visual element but an optical one. They're both superlative lenses for the needs of most. Â s-a
