cfd954 Posted June 24, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted June 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am considering purchasing a new DSLR to replace my D200 which I have found to be less than appealing. I have been considering moving to the canon camp and getting either an XTi or a 30d but I then stumbled onto the digilux 3. I am just looking for some friendly advise as to if this camera is worth buying over a canon and how good the leica experience is. I know that from the reviews that I have seen the leica glass seems to be second to none. I appreciate anyone's input. Also if you would recommend something other than the digilux 3 please let me know, however I don't have the cash to do an M8 or I would.
dugby Posted June 25, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted June 25, 2007 Edolyne. Welcome to this Leica UG forum. Â I have had a whole string of Nikon F, Olympus OM and Minolta SLRs over the last 30 odd years. Â In January just prior to a holiday from Australia to Tokyo-Paris-London my Leica Digilux 2 had a sensor failure. My next camera was planned to be an M8, but with only a few days before travelling, and: 1) no time to accumulate what I needed for an M8 (in Australia this can take months), on top of that the M8 IR and Power/on issues, and Infinity focus issues of the 35LUX... 2) no D3 was available for 3 months 3) a Panasonic L1 was available at a local Panasonic Dealer. Â I had to buy the L1 to cover my photographic needs for that above trip. Â Please review the L1 ( ie the DNA donor to the D3) on this forum. I'm not sure if you intended this in your question for alternatives to a D3.........
cfd954 Posted June 25, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted June 25, 2007 My question was directed more towards if anyone would suggest any other brands or a different Leica product. I shoot mostly landscape and architectures and do some occasional portraits of family and friends so I don't need the fastest of cameras. The reason that I have decided to lean towards Leica is due to the quality of their glass, Mega OIS, anti-dust capabilities and the very minimal distortion of the kit lens on the D3 which seems to be better than Canon L glass. I am aware that this is a Leica forum and I know that information will be biased towards Leica and that is great because they do seem to have a very good product. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. Â As far as the L1 goes I have looked at that option but I have always wanted to own a Leica since last year when someone took the time to explain Leica, their history and attention to detail to me. I also like the extras that Leica packs with their camera, plus the 3 year warranty just seems like a better value to me. For me the value for the price difference in the Leica really shows itself when I look at getting an XTi with similar capabilities, the L glass and bounce flash. At that point the price difference is negligible and I also get a metal body. Â I do appreciate any help as making a leap to a Leica is a big one for me especially because I always see people shooting with canons or nikons. jaapv Posted June 25, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted June 25, 2007 It is an attractive camera, especially considering the possibility of using the whole range of Olympus 4/3 lenses as well plus the Leica R lenses.
