Impurchased my first M10 in Dec 2017 along with a Summilux 50 and Summicron 35.

With the 35 mounted, I noticed random misreading do the lens by the body thinking it was an R Adapter or 21mm. I also had focus issues with both lenses.

I drove to the Leica repair center in NJ for them to check it out. They could not reproduce the lens I'd issue but they said that both lenses were out of calibration right from the factory. I left with the body, but they kept my brand new lenses and told me that I would not get them back for 5 weeks. Massive bummer! I spent $12,000 for my first Leica and could not take a single picture. So much for the legendary Leica quality.

After I got my lenses back, they were tack sharp, but I still experienced the random misreading of the 35mm lens. I discovered by accident that flicking the frame line lever would fix the problem. After a few months of use and flicking the lever a lot, the problem seemed to go away.

I since purchased a second new M10 body. This one has had no issues yet after a few months of use. Keeping my fingers crossed for now.

In my experience the sticking has occurred in the lens mount itself most of the time, and not the lever or internal mechanism. Seems to vary depending on the lens in use. Burrs on the flange perhaps. A tiny bit of lube on that mechanism might help, but I just live with it and work the lever to pull up the proper frame.

Misreading the lens sounds like it's possible you aren't mounting the lens correctly, and probably why Leica couldn't replicate it. Maybe you are doing it correctly, but just to be sure allow the lens to snap into place by keeping your finger off the lens release button when mounting it, otherwise it can rotate over-centre on the body and all sorts of mayhem and head scratching bafflement will ensue.

Hi Rob

I previously reported that my initially sticky lever a year ago losened up through use. Now, however, it seems to be back and even worse after a year of use (?)! And my experience is exactly like yours; behaviour varying by the lens used. Really annoying... and I ¨blame¨ the M10 body to the full and not the lenses.

Anyone having returned the M10 to Leica and having experience with how they deal with this issue?

PS: this issue with the new M10 gets even more irritating when I pick up both the M6 and the M9 with their perfect ¨clockwork¨ levers with their superprecise tiny clicks... ;-)

  • 5 years later...

Found this old thread when I searched for my sticky M9M monochrom frame lever. Different Leica, but this is what I found, did. The lever was very sticky, only moving manually even with lens changes (at least I could move it). I took the lever cap off with a thick tape to get a grip, and found there was white corrosion around the brass center part. Cleaned that and applied a light oil with a cotton swab with the idea some would migrate into the brass area. Put the lever back on with the screw on cap. Worked it, and some sunshine warming with more working, and it is now moving back and forth freely. But, I can’t say it is as smooth as my M4 frame lever (not sure if it ever was).
