Hi everyone. Last night my M10 died. Was out to dinner and shot some pics sitting in restaurant. First, the card wouldn't write. When I would review pics it said the card was empty. But i could still shoot. So I would shoot a few and review them and looked good and then pick up camera a few minutes later and no pics. Formatted card. Turn camera on and off. Took battery out and put back in. Same. Then turned on and lights come on, menu works, live view comes up but shutter release doesn't actuate shutter. Nothing. Camera won't shoot pics. Tried everything, nadda. I am going to take to Miami Leica in AM. Have all original paperwork and receipts so hoping fix won't be an issue. Any ideas? Thanks. Rob

Hi Rob - First of all, it's a shame to hear. When we buy any equipment, regardless of $ spent, we expect it to work. But when we spend this sort of money, there's a feeling of betrayal when the thing we buy, in fact, doesn't work.

There's a lemon in every manufactured lot over a threshold volume so we never know if the reported defective item is representative or if it's the statistical one-off item.

A couple of questions: what firmware version are you using? For how long have you had the camera (I.e., >1000 activations)? What kind of shooting were you engaged in when the camera turned defective (e.g., single shots, rapid shots)? What was the ambient temp when the camera turned defective?

Think of anything that could be the root cause: heat, bad firmware, bad card, etc. Start with the simplest thing (card) and proceed from there. Perhaps do a factory reset and reinstall latest firmware.

Good luck and good thoughts your way.

Sorry you've had the problem. What firmware, what SD card? Make sure you're using the latest version.

I'd do the following:

  • format the SD card using SD Formatter (and check it's a legitimate copy and functions on another camera)
  • remove the battery from the camera
  • fully charge the battery
  • re-set the camera (via menu)
  • test the camera again

Any of these checks may help.

Best

I am using the original firmware. Camera has probably 2-2500 actuations. Got camera in March. I was shooting with the 28 Lux at ISO 800 inside a restaurant. Portraits.

Thank you for the firmware suggestion. I'll put the new firmware on and see if I get lucky. R

I assume original firmware is you never updated since bought new? I would suggest update the newest firmware and format the card.

Well you guys were right - it was the card. I was using a sandisc 32gb ultra plus. I bought a 16gb, formatted it in my M9 and the M10 works again. Maybe this 32 gb card is bad. My M9 won't see it to format it. Says no card when I try it in the M9.

Gentle suggestion to update to new firmware ASAP.

The FW file goes in root directory of your card, not in any folder. ;) Then let her rip!

Just an additional note - the most recent firmware upgrade is specifically to improve compatability with a wider range of SD cards.

From the release notes for Leica M10 FW 1.7.4.0:

Improvements of SD card compatibility
Effective immediately a larger choice of SD cards is compatible with the Leica M10.
With the last Firmware, certain SD cards were not recognized, or the complete write speed could not be used with the camera.
The Leica M10 supports SDHC/SDXC cards from 1GB up to 512 GB. We recommend to use cards with write speed 80 MB/s or higher in order not to restrict the cameras performance. In single cases it can occur that the speed, stated by the cards manufacturers, differs from the effective read or write speed in the Leica M10.
Use UHS I cards instead of UHS II. The M10 is compatible with UHS II cards, but does not use the full UHS II speed.
