Does anyone know the differences between the 15 and the 16 models

Leitz determined that the Zeiss 15mm Hologon was not a good fit for the M body with the lens' 4.5mm back focal distance. The 16mm Hologon is a Leica design with slightly different lens construction. (Leitz bought Zeiss Ikon's Hologon stockpile in the early Seventies when Zeiss Ikon went out of business.)

The Hologon's enormous angle of light toward the sensor edges makes it, in my opinion, unsuitable for an M10 which has filters over the sensor. It might be popular for monochrom users. In the end, I would look to Cosina's wide angles, 10mm, 12mm or 15mm which have entirely different designs than the Hologon.

Never heard that before.

I edited out 'for more clearance' until I find a good citation. Leitz's redesign should offer more clearance, however another advantage for them is that the new design might have been easier, more economical to produce.

16mm Hologon is a Zeiss design. I think Leica did not have any expertise to come up with such a lens. I think Hologon is abiogonal design.

  • 1 month later...

I recently couldn't pass on a good deal for a modified to M-mount 16mm/f8 Hologon which is now have fitted on my M10. The rear lens protrusion does not touch, hit, scrape or block the shutter blades, which operate correctly, at least with my copy. I imagine its very close though. The real issue I have found is with quite pronounced magenta edges. I have not experimented with the lens enough to figure out the best manual lens settings in camera. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions?
