Camera Insurance

I used to pay for separate camera insurance, but [ed: as part of my house and contents insurance] AXA include personal possessions out of the house anywhere in the world up to £25,000 in value.

I now pay less for my house and contents insurance than I used to just for the camera kit.

I just wish they included the dog too.

The dog! My Great Pyrenees passed away several years ago and being dim, it took me two years to discover how our household budget was suddenly so full.

If you're in the US, and if you qualify, best opportunity is to get a special rider to a home policy that covers valuables worldwide without deductible at full replacement cost, and with affordable premiums. Major insurers like AIG and Chubb offer such coverage through special plans. Clients typically have high net worth, and cameras are cheap compared to the typical art/ collectibles/ valuables covered under such plans.

In the US any full-service insurance agent can provide personal articles coverage. The rate is about $100 per $10,000 of insured value.

I wish I could find something that cheap in Australia. The cheapest I've found is about double that; 2 to 2.5 times typically but sometimes even more. I've seen crazy quotes like $6k per annum or almost 10% the insured amount!

Very few home & contents insurers will insure portable items for more than AUD $50k and the ones that do are prohibitively expensive. They're not designed for the case where portable items are a large proportion of the overall amount insured. Most camera and travel insurers also have no concept of the value of Leica gear; they think AU $4,000 is the most expensive camera or lens you can buy, let alone $65-100k worth of kit!

There are only a couple of brokers I've found offering portable equipment coverage to the value I need, and often the conditions aren't as comprehensive as I'd like. So due to a lack of competition it seems the prices get pushed up.

Does anyone have any tips or recommendations for Australian insurers or brokers? Also, how much of your collection do you insure under the conditions of portable theft, loss and accidental damage... your complete collection or only some of it? If only part, how does your insurer handle covering less than the full (replacement) value of a collection? I.e. will they cover only particular named items or can you choose up to the insured value from a larger list?

Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Hi there. In the process of renewing my home insurance and the balked at the cost of my Leica kit. Anyone know of company or group that can quote for camera kit? Any information gratefully received. Regards Robin.

I'm surprised. Do you insure through a broker or directly with a company? We use a broker (Aston Scott) for household insurance and have not had a problem with Leica kit, which is valued separately, and some individual items are specifically listed.

I always thought insurers saw expensive stuff as an opportunity to make more money in premiums rather than a problem to avoid.

I have never investigated whether insuring cameras through household insurance is cheaper than a separate policy. Anyone else checked?

After all, you may get a better deal on household insurance if you're not limited to those willing to insure photographic stuff at the expensive end.

Like others, my broker recommended Axa who are a good price and a reliable company.

I'm not connected to either of the companies below other than I've used or am using them. Both seem to advertise in the photo press and / or dealers.

I was with Towergate Camerasure (Towergate Camerasure: Jellicoe House, Grange Drive, Hedge End, SO30 2AF) but am currently with Photoguard (Thistle Insurance Services Ltd., Southgate House, Southgate Street, Gloucester, GL1 1UB)

The change to Photoguard was simply because the premium was slightly lower.
