LeicaPassion Posted June 22, 2017 Share #22 Posted June 22, 2017 Even 20 weeks makes me want to rush to the emergency room.
mjqfoto Posted July 10, 2017 Share #23 Posted July 10, 2017 My experience is that by the time the corrosion begins to be seen in prints or by visually examining the sensor it is pretty far advanced. With my M9 and MM I was never able to see the corrosion with my lighted sensor magnifier. Nor did it show at normal apertures on computer screen or in prints. I had to shoot a clear sky at small apertures in order to see it. In your case I suspect the corrosion started far earlier than the date you first became aware of it. I urge everyone with an original sensor to actively check for corrosion by shooting a small aperture image of a clear sky and then carefully examining for spots that won't move with a sensor brush or Rocket Blower. If you see them take advantage of Leica's free inspection and cleaning. If you wait for the corrosion to reveal itself in your images it may be after August 15 and you will have to pay part of the replacement cost. I have the MM1, I think; I am not sure since I bought it 3rd hand on Ebay about two years ago. I saw some dust spots on my computer screen, took the MM into the local camera shop to have the sensor cleaned. The technician showed me a photo of the before and after with the dust spots removed and very slightly visible "amoeba" that he said he had never seen before. I could barely see them and had not thought they were different for dust spots and had tried to remove them in Lightroom but they never really were removed. A fuzzy shadow remained. When I called Leica NJ and described what I saw, Roxanna said that it was the rust and to send it in. She offered an upgrade to the 246 for around $3800 if their technician finds rust. I called Leica Store Boston; they agreed and offered to send my camera, free of charge, to NJ and monitor the process. Roxanna said the work would take up to 6 months; the sales person in Boston thought he could get the upgrade done faster, within two or three weeks. If they offer to replace the sensor, I am hesitant to take that offer since I don't know what caused the rust originally and the new one may start to rust. I am not tech smart and don't understand the difference in the sensor for the 246 and the one for the MM1. I believe the 246 is 24 Megapixels while the MM1 is 18. On one site, a commentator said he saw a difference in the quality of the photos from MM1 and 246 because of the sensor. I am inclined to go with the 246 if the offer is made. I would appreciate any reactions.
LeicaPassion Posted July 10, 2017 Share #24 Posted July 10, 2017 According to Leica Rumors, the upgrade cost for the 246 is 3480.
jaapv Posted July 10, 2017 Share #25 Posted July 10, 2017 I am hesitant to take that offer since I don't know what caused the rust originally and the new one may start to rust. Well, it is not really rust - that applies to iron or Rose leaves -, but corrosion. The sensor Leica uses for the replacement is corrosion-proof, so you need not worry on that account. The main differences between Monochrom 1 and Monochrom 2 are a higher ISO capacity, slightly better exposure latitude, Live View and EVF, improved rangefinder, different bottom plate, higher capacity battery. The increase from 18 to 24 MP is not really of much interest, you will hardly notice it, especially in print. Personally I prefer the Monochrom1. mjqfoto Posted July 10, 2017 Share #26 Posted July 10, 2017 Thanks. I will probably stay with MM1. It's a friend by now.
