Two pictures taken early evening on Friday when the skies opened up over Canary Wharf. Both shots taken from the terrace bar of the Rotherhithe Hilton across the Thames.

Both D-LUX 2, iso 100, f/8

A couple of crackers there, Louis. It's almost as if you'd placed the beer glasses there deliberately :)

Guys, once again, thanks for the encouragement - it really helps me develop as a photographer.

Andy, good point. In fact I didn't pose the glasses and it leads me to critically appraise a missed opportunity. If I had really thought about it I would have posed the glasses to mirror the skyline. I think that intuitively realising there was a picture worth taking but failing to exploit the positioning is what distinguishes my efforts from that of a professional.

Nothing amateur about what you've done here, though. This is a well taken shot of a happy happenstance.

You might have had to order a different round next time, just to get glasses to match the skyline :) Definitely a champagne flute to cover One Canada Square...

Louis: The light capture in No 1 is beautiful. Would make a nice print. What a shame we can't go up to the public viewing gallery on Canary Wharf anymore :(

Frankly, you have done very well to present competent photos from that location. I would have trouble with the horizons. Its a paralax thing. By the time I am smacked with six beers.....:(:D

Thank goodness for image stabilisation ;)

Again, many thanks for all your responses

Louis

Very effective and intriguing dual composition with lots of correspondences between lower and upper (eg tall shapes, horizontal ground/liquid) and inversions (solid buildings: liquid in glasses). Also unusual light set off by complementarity of metallic blue river, table, sky and "amber nectar". But you knew all that. Great stuff.
